    Samsung LN-S4692D Left Side Blur

    Hey all

I've got another 46 inch puzzle here. This one is a Samsung LN-S4692D. I was told that "when you turn it on no picture is visible. The sound is there and you can cycle through the channels but can't see anything".

However when I got it home it had a picture However it's not perfect, the left side of the screen is darker with a red hue, and has a lag or blur effect. The images seems to stay on the screen longer than they should. Occasionally there a vertical lines on the far right side of the screen, they tend to appear only if there is a ticker bar running along the bottom of the screen. This issue occurs on all of the inputs.

There also appears to be a faint horizontal line running across the middle of the screen.

I took a video of what the TV is doing. You can see it here.

I tested the t-con and it is getting about 5v from the LVDS cable.

Is this typical of a bad t-con or a bad display? Any particular test I can do to determine what the issue is before I spend money on parts for this set?

I pulled the tv all the way apart today and exposed the tab bonds. I tried the trick of applying pressure to the tab bonds, but was unable to get the picture to change at all. I imagine that because the image did not change than all the tab bonds are ok.

I think I am going to source a replacement t-con for this tv first.

Any luck with the tcon? It's a fairly common problem on this model.

OK, I have "fixed" two Samsung panels with this problem. It is due to a driver I.C. debonding from the flextape that feeds into the panel glass.

The I.C. is located under the metal frame around the panel. If you are desperate enough and brave enough to risk the panel then you have to remove it from the plastic frame and lay it on its back to remove the screws in the metal frame and lift it off.

On the two units I repaired the problem was in the upper right corner of the screen so it was the furthest right flextape along the top edge of the screen.

There is virtually nothing you can do to re-bond the chip to the flextape but if you take a piece of heat sink foam about .075" thick and place it over the flextape so that the frame compresses the flextape against the chip then it will usually make contact again. One of my panels was a 100% repair and the other had a slight problem remaining on startup which went away on warmup and was mechanically sensitive. YMMV.

That is the real signature of this failure mode. Mechanically sensitive and better after warmup as well as the blurring and high persistence in the image.

Hope this helps, and remember, if you break the glass you'll let all the magic out.
