My dad's old HP small form factor office PC is no longer capable of doing the tasks he demands, being an old 1.7GHz Pentium 4 processor with SDRAM-133. So, I have a spare motherboard and case around, but no power supply.
I need to get a power supply of around 200 - 250W output power, at most, as the motherboard only has an older AMD processor on it (but still faster than his P4.) I doubt the system will draw any more than 100W under reasonable load. I absolutely do not trust these so called "750W" power supplies: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-QUIET-...item20c216f8fa As I can see no way anyone could make a 750W PSU for £20 and not lose money. They are almost certainly cheap barely capable 200W PSUs. They are also almost certainly not CE compliant and would radiate a lot of EMI. And they almost certainly have cheap caps, so they'll die after a year or so. I want this PC to last. Incidentally, the motherboard has OST caps for the CPU, so I'll be recapping it with some Nichcon HM's. So, I'm thinking instead of spec'ing in a used power supply, probably an old workstation one, like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=400292695320 I'm just wondering if it's a normal ATX connector - or if it's some proprietary IBM one? I know Dell had proprietary PSU connectors which meant they were pretty much tied to Dell motherboards - did IBM do the same thing? What other sources are there for decent quality PSUs which won't break the bank (budget max £25)?
