On most tape recorders is a switch is called "Beat Cancel".
From a circuit, the position of this switch changes the bias oscillator frequency. One of the reasons for having this switch is to eliminate AM/FM radio interference when recording. Is another reason for having this switch is for use with "normal" and "metal" tapes?

AFAIK it was only to elliminate radio interference, especially AM.
