Default Purpose of Beat Cancel switch

On most tape recorders is a switch is called "Beat Cancel".
From a circuit, the position of this switch changes the bias oscillator frequency.
One of the reasons for having this switch is to eliminate AM/FM radio interference when recording.
Is another reason for having this switch is for use with "normal" and "metal" tapes?

AFAIK it was only to elliminate radio interference, especially AM.

That is correct...it will help reduce/eliminate the whistling on AM , but does not help for impulse static.
