Stuff like this and the "canned answers" in some threads ("bad caps can be caused by age, heat or shoddy build quality"... I know that one from the top of my head already), as well as the good/bad caps list etc. kinda made me think about a badcaps wiki or something. Preferably a closed one to prevent spam (i.e. only people with 100+ posts can edit it or something)

Just a brainfart..

my thoughts too.

it was this whole bit to why I made recapping videos... I'd write my own wiki if I had time but I don't

some topics that would be good start:

general info:
what are bad caps?
why do caps fail?
which caps are bad?

recapping:

solder sucker recapping
needle recapping
braid recapping*
desoldering iron recapping *
desolderign gun recapping
cap installation*

recap theory:

mobo/gpu recappping
mobo/gpu poly mods
PSU recapping

special topics:

nichicon hm/hn datecodes*

*- I would be willign to help write these topics. the first 3 I have done tutorial videos on.

There's already a bad capacitor wiki.... Any information obtained from here, I'd appreciate not being replicated/reposted elsewhere..... A lot of this is covered in the FAQ, it anyone eveen reads that anymore. If anyone thinks it needs updating, feel free to rewrite it.....and I or a moderator can amend it....but no, information here may not be copied to a wiki site.

Ehm.. I meant a badcaps-internal wiki. Not an external one.
Sort of like side-by-side to the forum, or partly integrated (keywords in the forum linking to the corresponding wiki article)

http://www.mediawiki.org

Like I said.. just a brainfart. It's not meant like "we have to have blahblah" or something..

I was thinking a BCN wiki. A compliment to the forum:

forum- discussions and answering specific questions

wiki- general topics and tutorials.

a FAQ is nice but some things take more than just an A to a Q/A set. as for the BCN faq forum, TBH, its a mess. a lot of the info is out of date (example- the section on inline pics is obsolete, as the method shown no longer works)

It just seems like I and other keep on repeating the same thing over and over again...

just tossing out an idea or two, please don't shoot me! (sarcasm)

I dont know why all the inline picture hatred, I think it makes life a lot easier, especially if there's a story and the pics need to be viewed in a specific order for the post to make sense.... If people learn to resize, it helps....but for inline pics, they will be resized automatically so not to destroy the post/thread. The attachment method should still work the same as it always had.....

If it needs updating (which it definitely does), are you volunteering? (careful what you wish for)

As for an on-site wiki system....that's just something I would not have the time to babysit..... sorry.

[QUOTE=Topcat;205233] A lot of this is covered in the FAQ, it anyone even reads that anymore.

Hi I consider myself a newbie here , though not as new as Jananas. I have used the site for 12 months and a, it is brilliant and b, it is fairly difficult to navigate. As Topcat says "if anyone even reads that anymore" well at the risk of being banned have you tried that recently? Despite the posts saying "do not ask questions here" there are loads of them and if you are new, trying to read the FAQ ends up almost more time consuming than fixing something. For what worth I think the FAQ should be a locked reference only forum with the first item saying if you have good information to post here send it to????? a moderator? If that proves too onerous and too much rubbish is received it could be changed

If the FAQ was in Sections the moderator could then place the information in the most suitable section preventing duplication, reject it, or if interesting but not thought likely to be frequently asked put in the relevant forum, where those looking for it might find it.

As an alternative, I dont know how many moderators there are but perhaps they could take it in turns to check the FAQ regularly and move "rubbish "off it

Perhaps a second entry in the FAQ could be an emphasis on using the search facility which I am sure is underused.

As a minimum , someone? should go through and delete all the junk in there now or transfer it to whichever forum it should have been in.

There you go then , a classic example of difficult navigation. I was referring to the
FAQ section in the Battling the Bad Capacitors Forum not the FAQ Forum?.
My apologies, perhaps the FAQ Heading could be headed RULES? or Getting Started
though I see that might be too long a title.

It does need some kind of revamp, I agree 100%.....just not sure the best way to go about it yet. Some of that stuff is as old as the forum itself. I'm thinkin that the very common FAQ's need to be hardcoded into the forums, and the postable FAQ section simply done away with. it is a bit confusing up there.

by wrong, I mean that you cannot highlight a link and then hit the img button to post it inline... you have to copy the link and then paste in the window.

TBH, the biggest problem with the FAQ as it is is that updates don't show up first, but last. that is a problem, as a FAQ shoudl show the correct and up to date info first , which is the opposite to a forum.

I had an Idea to create a "pseudo-wiki":
  • New sub-forum or firum
  • every thread is limited to one post.
  • the posts can be modified by users with powers like a mod, only int hat forum. these people would be considered "edit managers", with the power to edit any thread
  • every thread is like a wiki page
  • commentary on the threads would eb given a second sub forum, in order to keep the the wiki forum clean and to the point.

In essence, you have created a wiki system within the forum. the only issue would be that non-members would not be allowed to see uploaded images to go with the wiki pages, which is a whole 'nother argument.

just another idea I am tossing out for viewing

---

trust me, if I had the time, I have thought about writing a how-to document on recapping... but I don't want to get in copyright type binds...

---

as fir volunteering to fix stuff, sure, I could fix stuff here and there... but it may take a while and as stated above it would only be a half fix.

in some places in the boonies it is either that or pay out the *** for sh!tty satelite (56k uploads). also, some people just are that poor or only do email and forums and have no need to spend more than $10/month on an internet connection.

still, the majority of users use broadband...

for those still on dialup by choice or otehrwise, tough teepee.....put inline pics in your posts all you want people.... It will not be frowned upon by the site administration in any way.

Resizing them is always a wise thing to do though... There's no reason to upload a 3648x2736 pic that's 8mb in size.....that's just lazy, stupid, and retarded.
