Default Hotrod Dell Precision470 (paxville core processors)

Just for Shovenose.....more XP, Netburst, and Firefox!!

As some of you know, I've been cleaning my attic, pulling all kinds of interesting things out of there...

I've had a Dell precision up there since I did the remodel, I took it out of service a couple years ago, as its duties were off'd onto another machine. So yea, no big deal....it was a dual SL7ZF (3GHz Irwindale single core, 2mb cache)...was a decent machine for a netburst wonder....well in the process of my cleanup, I found a couple interesting CPU combos... First is a pair of 3.6GHz Irwindale core QAMW, which is a pair of engineering samples....unlocked multiplier!! They ran in the 470 @ 3.6....but Dell and their denutted BIOS didn't allow for any tweaking....so meh... I then came into a pair of 2.8GHz SL8MA 4mb Dual core Paxville core Xeons.....hmmmm Keeping in mind that the Precision 470/670 was never intended to run dual core or paxville core CPU's, the searching I did yielded more negative than positive results. It seems some boards would run them, some wouldn't...it was a crapshoot, so I didn't have much hope that it would do anything....but being attic junk, I figured what the hell and stuck 'em in there.... This message is being posted from it... It's dual core WITH HT....so its showing 8 cores. For netburst (and dual core at that), they're running pretty cool actually, but noticeably warmer than the single core CPU's...and the machine is snappier than I ever remember it.... Theres 8gb of RAM in it and a 7600GT video card....and for the XP lovers, x64. Not bad for an attic find!! I have no idea where these processors came from, probably a goodie box somewhere over the years.... Hail the free quadcore system!! I did have to recap it....like 3~4 years ago when it was given to me...

I don't think my Tyan Thunder S2603 with two S603 Prestonia Xeon 2400DP's (SL6K2) and 2GB PC800 RDRAM can keep up with that
lol

Imagine what a sys like that would've cost you when it was new... omg

edit: the above stuff is from/in a HP x4000 Workstation

Nice find, I have a Precision 470 with a Paxville CPU too (just one though)
I use it as a test server for Techspot

If you fire up CPU-Z you should be able to confirm that your board is a "XC838"
It will be listed under the "mainboard" tab and section "model"

Here is a lengthy thread I made for mine, it was much harder to fix it, in the end I had to replace the mobo to support the Paxville CPU anyway...
http://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthr...light=paxville

Do those other Xeons you had with L3 cache work in it?

Sure enough, it does. 0XC838 is what shows for model.

Ohh I wish, I tried them. I got turbo fan syndrome. I never knew those cpu fans would spin so fast! You would lose a finger if you stuck it in there. It was blowing screws off the bench onto the floor, and papers all the way on the other end of the bench (bench is 11ft long). Everything I've found about the Tulsa cores, they're intended for a quad socket setup....and there are no dual boards that support them....

Ok, thanks for trying atleast.
Yea I had the same experience, as I did not google enough I bought 2x SL8UD processors and the fans ran at 100% with those, no POST either...

I found 6 pairs of xeon processors in this box. Several pairs found homes in other random boards, but I've still got 3 pairs left (the engineering samples, the Tulsa's, and the original Irwindale 3GHz that was in the precision to begin with). I found 2 pair of 3GHz Gallatins, but I had a couple boards for those. I figured if I can get them mated up with working boards, it'll be much easier to find them homes. The Prec470 is a keeper though.

I have a classic zenith one with the buttons on the side only... not sure if it works (it didn't like my 286 based zenith supersport portable).

btw, it may be a dell, but alt least it is a pro grade dell... if it were consumer crap, it would be different
