Well, at least it's easy to change if it fails...

That is odd - I haven't seen that before. It looks like the plugs I usually see on laptop cmos batteries... Are you sure that is the way it was from the factory? I've seen computer owners try all sorts of snake oil mods to improve this or that.

I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Is that in place of the CMOS battery?

Hey, if it's a working solution, don't knock it.

              Mm yeah.
Laptop usually relies on discharging main battery instead of using lithium for CMOS.

But it is a bit suspicious as it doesn't allow reverse charge. Goldcap could work, but not ordinary lytic.

The laptop is at the office and I'm not going in on a Sunday to go look.
It IS a factory job though. It plugs into a connector and the capacitor attaches to that black double sided sticky pad. The CMOS battery is elsewhere on the board. I believe it was a UNC cap though. It feels as if they could not fit the cap to the board and forgot that there were smaller alternatives available.

Interesting that it's not acting as the CMOS backup. Most laptops just stick with poly on-board.

                          Re: Nice one, Acer.

Hmm...I found a photo of a 6530 motherboard on eBay that clearly shows a capacitor with wire leads and a plug attached to the board. I was almost sure it was going to be some sort of modification, but all evidence seems to point to it being that way from the factory. How bizarre.

Pretty sure I've seen GCE and Compeq markings on Acer laptop boards, same as 90% of the laptop brands out there... Don't quote me on that though, I don't repair Acer laptops often.
