    The 2012 Operating System Thread

It's been a while for one of these....and with Win8 on the horizon (which the seat of my pants is telling me it's going to be another vista-like Microsoft blunder), I'm just curious who's using what these days....

This thread isn't intended to be a debate on what's better....but I'm sure it'll spiral into that like they all do....I'm just curious how many people are keeping the 'good old stuff' going...

    My home stuff

    Server: Linux - Centos 6
    Notebook: Win7 Pro 32
    Desktop Win7 Pro 32
    Utility PC XP Pro

Not planning on jumping on Win8 any time soon.

I only went to 7 because the indexing works much better than the 3rd party stuff I was using on XP, VSS is better, and better SSD support.
36 Monitors, 3 TVs, 4 Laptops, 1 motherboard, 1 Printer, 1 iMac, 2 hard drive docks and one IP Phone repaired so far....

Windows 7 is only on my main gaming rig still keeping the old warhorse XP running on all the others with the exception of Windows 2003 Server on the domain controller.

I see you put Windows Me in there? Come to think of it that was the Windows Vista of it's day wasn't it ?
Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

Re: The 2012 Operating System Thread

fedora 16 x64 and vista x32 on my school laptop. fedora sees far more use on it than the seldom used vista half, so linux got my single vote. this laptop is what I use 85% of the time anymore...

my old laptop uses xp due to graphics driver issues (i8xx bug).

my main rig uses vista but any more it gets used every other day. my other computers (minus 2 PPC macs) run one distro or another of linux.

Windows 7 all across the board, except for my fileserver/torrentbox which is XP Pro.

As for BeOS, I messed around with Haiku (an open-source modernized clone of BeOS) and I was thoroughly impressed. I have needs that can only be addressed by Windows 7 but goddamn, if I could use Haiku as my main OS then I would.

Haiku is getting there, it's great.

But i do my operating systems oddly. Workstation is windows 7 stripped down all the way (so basically 2008R2 in workstation mode). Laptop (thinkpad x220) runs Arch Linux with kernel 3.2+. Arch on all my linux VPSs as well, have one Win2008R2 vps.

                  Desktop: Fedora 14 w/ Gnome 2
Server: Ancient install of Fedora 7
Netbook: MacOS 10.5 (although it can boot to Fedora or Windows XP)
                  Old-Folks computer: Fedora 16 w/ Xfce

Interestingly, the old folks find Fedora with Xfce to be easier to run that Windows 7 or Gnome 3. Of course they're not doing much, reading emails, playing solitare, and general web browsing.

Mine is running Fedora 14 now. When I get some time to upgrade, I'll go to Fedora 16 with Xfce, to avoid the abomination that is Gnome 3.

I have Windows 7 installed on another hard drive, and I could boot into it whenever I want, but I almost never do. The only times I do is to run tax software or play a game, which is almost never.

I forgot to specify, my laptop with fedora 16 x64 uses gnome 3, which I happen to like a lot. To each his own; GUIs are often an personal preference thing...

                          * I prefer Windows 7, however, we usually stay with older computers and components, and it shows.
                          * Mom actually finds Windows Vista to be usable.
                          * Dad still uses Windows 98 SE. Sad part was he wanted wireless capabilities on his relic Acer desktop (running W98SE).

Windows 7 because a 6 month old computer shouldn't run a 10 year old OS.
After spending all day fixing and removing malware from XP machines, I prefer the interface and efficiency of Win 7.
