    Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000

Microsoft keyboards and mice are generally my first choice. I specify them for the office also, some of the oldest ones there have armrests which have become shiny over the years and they are still working. But this is my first wireless set

So this is the Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 which features a Wireless Comfort Keyboard and a Wireless Laser Mouse 6000. There is quite a few versions of the wireless keyboards and it helps if you decide first which mouse you want. Some are only the basic mice.

Here is the keyboard and mouse. They are the silver version.

the keyboard has a comfortable foamy armrest. i am sure that will be worn in a while though. The armrest is not detachable.

Close up of the mouse. Silver tends to wear off after a few years so they dont stay as nice as the black ones. looks nice and shiny st the moment though. Its quite a large mouse but certainly not as heavy as the reviews made me believe. Seems to be the same as the explorer 4 or slightly bigger.

The clicking motion is very nice and the two function buttons on the right side are high so they are not accidentally pressed.

The tracking of this mouse is awful though. I dont know if it is because of my table (which works fine with all of the microsoft optical mice i have used. Its certainly not like what other reviews said.

Here you can see what was suprising. Obviously because silver tends to wear off they did not put silver keys. They are in fact a neutral plastic colour which you can see through. looks odd from close up as you can see inside the key but from a normal typing position they look fine. The rest of the keyboard is silver.

The keyboard is a contour keyboard which is supposed to be more ergonomic. I tried a natural one a long time ago which i never got used to. I can almost touch type the same as a normal keyboard with the contour type but with more mistakes. It will take a bit of getting used to but its not as bad as the natural. You can see also the buttons at the top in the pic, you have 5 favourites buttons, volume/mute and other media buttons for track selection. I have never used these on any keyboard really.

Then on the left there are more buttons. what is interesting is there is a toggle which goes back to the centre with a spring. this does a scroll function but its not very good for that. It is intended to be used for zoom function and it is quite good at that.

here is the receiver which has 3 leds on it for caps lock, num lock and f lock. Actually the keyboard and mouse have no lighting on them at all so you have no visual sign if they are operational or not.

The underside of the keyboard is typical but it would be better for lap use if it was smooth.

here is something interesting which i did not notice before in the intellipoint drivers. its a magnifier which is very useful. i have one of the mouse buttons configured to activate it.

so in the end i was impressed with the keyboard but not the mouse.

M$ wireless mice blow goats. They eat batteries like crazy, and aren't rechargeable (I hope they changed that idiocy). My last one required a batt change every 3 days or so, insane!! I went with the Logitech MX1000 true laser wireless mouse. Has a Lithium Ion batt, and a recharging cradle. I've left it off the charger for over a week, and it didn't go dead... As far as a keyboard, I'm using a 15yr old Keypro 9001 'clicky' with sidebar F-keys (great for gaming, mainly Diablo2).

works with rechargeable nimh AA fine. they reduced the range so it is now 6ft and uses less power. The small range means no good for media centre pc though. but its better for security. i remember a report in the early days of someone's typing appearing on the computer in the next apartment. nice if you are logging into ssh.

the mouse is not tracking well at all. the keyboard is nice though.

I like the keyboard, but I have just about given up with wireless mice that don't have a charging cradle. My 2 now are Logitech, and I get very tired of changing batteries. Using rechargable batteries means I don't have to buy new batteries, just change them twice as much.

I forgot to mention that part... The latency and tracking on my old M$ wireless mouse was awful... Couldn't even play Starcraft with it, forget trying to play a FPS.... It was ok for web browsing and typical windows BS. The only big brownie point it earned was it was comfy. It fit my hand nice!

Re: Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000

Only wireless mouse I've ever had was a GE. Worked extremely well - when it worked. If you held down the buttons too long they would stay down (especially the left one) - not physically, but in terms of what it was receiving. You'd have to reset it that way. It also randomly stopped responding at other times, and ate batteries like no tomorrow. Resyncing it was a pain as well.

On the other hand, my two corded optical mice have been great to me. My $15 Microsoft was the best mouse I'd ever owned until the scroll wheel quit (I bounced it off the desk a few times), and my Logitech Wheel Mouse (the original) is just as durable, but has a cheaper feel.

Keyboards? Your new baby looks great, although I'm an old-keyboard person myself. The only rubber-dome keyboard I have that I get along with is my Dell QuietKey...which isn't exactly quiet. I still love my older boards: a Dell buckling-spring that randomly falls asleep in games (so it's on my 1 GHz machine with onboard video ), a '93 model M (missing some keys), and my baby, from an old NEC portable. ALPS switches, a slightly unorthodox layout for the number pad (the arrow keys are above it)... Those are all PS/2.

Soo....planning to light up the translucent keys on your new 'board? And do you even use the little buttons?

(And even if it doesn't work well, that is one sexy mouse. )
You know there's something wrong when you open up a PSU and are glad to find Teapos.
Why I don't buy cheap cases!

i'd give an opinion, but TC already said it for me. As for keyboards, well....kinda hard to screw one up...as for mice.....Logitech. I've got an MX518 and then I have a bluetooth Logitech set. Mouse has recharging cradle, but not for kybd.

The layout of these M$ keyboards suck. F keys grouped by 3 (instead of 4) with that F-lock idiocy, no insert key, no scroll lock... I have 1993 Hyundai keyboard and some HP OEM Keytronics.

hahaha that was the first possibility i noticed.

actually i dont. i should though.

i will be using the magnifier a lot.

If you must have wireless and no battery. Wacom mice work wirelessly on their tablets without battery's. They're design is heavy, clunky and outdated though; I never used mine before I sold it.

well shit the mouse is working ok today. i have it on a 3m precise optical mouse surface now also.

why is it working? well i had switched back to my intellimouse optical changing the intellipoint software setting as well, then i didnt turn it back to wireless laser 6000. works better set like this. looks like a software issue.

most microsoft kb/mouse i have seen were oem by logitech.
                          i have a wireless kb/mouse combo from logitech.bought for $5 at a yardsale.
its ok but i know if i need parts logitech wont support it and its a throwaway.
cant even get a new battery door for the mouse.cant see spending that kinda money on throwaway stuff.

well i wish to boost the signal a bit. Taking the cover off is a start any ideas? there is pins for antenna......

by the way i have found successful method to take nice macros. these are not taken with the 20D they are taken with the little A700 on a tripod in macro mode with flash disabled. the camera chose f2.8 0.4s and 0.6s exposure which works nice.

the long traces that go to the feedthru marked ant1 is the antenna.

Lelon???? why you would want to put any Lelon cap in stuff you want to use by yourself? No certainely i would put some Rubycon ZLG, Philips or BC component cap in there. But ok, i have no clue abouth the real dimensions of them.

Re: Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000

When I velcro the Logitech reciever to the front of my monitor it stops working.
When I let it hang down it starts up again.
When I cross my legs the wrong way It skips and missclicks.

We have three sets of wireless Logitech mice/keyboards, wife, office, and living room.
This outdoor computer uses a handheld presenter device, Tsam-001, and it also has crappy range.
This leads me to my question for you guys. If your in an environment with multiple wireless devices, a variety of cordless phones, air cards, av transmitters, X10 stuff,
headphones, rf remote controles, just to name a few,
what frequency range are these jumping around on?
The other evening I was comfortably watching TV with the wireless headphones and suddenly heard two guys talking on the phone.
It scared the crap outa me, sounded like they were in the room. That's 900mhz and I now hear all kinds of wierd stuff on them.

I don't know the frequency of this Logitech stuff or the transmission method but it seems like when an aircraft comes in for a landing it goes nuts.
Well only kidding there but you never know how wierd interference can be.
