    What are these called?

What are these called, exactly? The other thread seems to have disappeared so i'll try to be brief.

Is it a two-row, 20 pin, IDC cable recepticle?

    Is it a 40-pin, 2-row insulated header?

I'm trying to order a replacement for a board and i cant figure out the correct terminology to use.

    ----------------------------

It seems that the second IDE connector was never soldered at all. None of the surface mount components have moved and there is no discoloration of the board but the pins are all still brass colored.

    The solder on the individual pins looks like this;

I guess my last post didn't make it.

Can i assume that i'm looking for a 40-pin, two row, header with 2.54mm pin spacing and row width?

I see a bunch that have exatly that but either don't have the index slot or that have a different type indexing holes.

Anyone have a part number? (digikey)

That looks correct to me, but Digikey wants $93.66 for only one of those.

Wrong pick: this is a DIN Rail Mounted Interface Module. Always look for its datasheets before buying.

              Re: What are these called?

Another search at Digikey or 'IDC' left too many options. I don't know the trade names for any of the listed 'locking/latching mechanisms'.

A search at Mouser was a lot easier to narrow down.

The top illustration in this document looks very close:

              http://www.mouser.com/Search/Product...mwim2A6w%3d%3d
              Mouser Part #: 649-66506-053LF
              Manufacturer Part #: 66506-053LF
$2.45 is cheap enough to experiment with

Digikey doesn't sell them: I've found some Ide & Sata cables and Sata connectors, but not Ide/Ata ones.

I don't understand why you don't just put the one you have back together and solder it in.

Initially i thought it might be nice to replace it with a 90 degree connector. It turns out that the index slot is on the wrong side to do something like that (the connector would face the wrong way). After looking at the pins under a hand held microscope i stated to wonder if there was a good reason that the original solder bonded to the IDE1 pins but almost not at all to IDE2 connector pins.

Could it be possible that somehow the factory didn't plate the solder ends of these pins with tin (or whatever preparation they might use)?

You should be able to press the pins back into the plastic and reassemble it.
Then solder it in properly by hand.

Hey, i needed some new caps anyway.

It's an extra board so there's no real loss if i toast it.

                            For the 90 degree.
There should be connectors somewhere that face the other way.
Also it's not that hard to modify one to get what you want.

                            Flip the plastic piece.
                            Put the pins back.
You will only have to be creative for one pin.
                            - If it's too long clip it.
                            - If it's too short then solder a left over lead scrap from a cap to it (not while it's in the plastic) and make it long enough.

True. I've already proved to myself that the pins slide right out.

Just remember to keep it true to the pin-out on the motherboard. !!!
Easy to get confused when flipping pins in connectors around.

You can usually get maybe 15 degrees tilt out of a straight pin version by simply soldering it in at an angle. You know. Pins on one side longer than the other.
