    Network sharing problems

Okay, let's do this again since the last thread went down the drain.

My friend recently wanted me to recover files off a hard drive he had and after I plugged the drive into my server I discovered that there was stuff on that drive I could not even pack on to a dvd. We came to a decision that I will just share the drive using the VPN program Hamachi and from there he can copy all the files he wants off the drive and then I can wipe and keep the drive.
The problem is that while most files can be copied, quite a few are locked because we do not have permission to even view them anymore.
The first thing I did was reset the permissions for the entire drive and made it so accounts "everyone" and "Hamachi" had full read/write control on the drive.
It did work to a degree but even after that initial change of permissions there are still pockets of files that refuse to have their permissions changed unless I go and manually do it and I don't have the time to do it to all the files.

Can I get some help here?

    Re: Network sharing problems

Well, what I usually do in this instance:

Go find a computer with Linux installed. It tends to ignore all the windows permissions. Pop the case off, plug the drive in, boot up, copy files.

If you don't have Linux installed, download the latest version of Knoppix, and start it off a CD. I believe it will also ignore windows permissions, and automatically mounts NTFS and FAT partitions.

Of course I dont know exactly what you're trying to do with the VPN, that could kind of throw a monkey wrench into the whole thing. You might try using Knoppix to copy the files to your server's HD then you can do whatever you want with 'em.

    Just my thoughts.

That's one of the first things I have tried but:
      a) ubuntu HATES hamachi
b)while the drive mounts and I am able to view files, I am not allowed to move or even copy files.

Seriously, just tell me how to reset ALL the permissions on the drive and I will be happy.

If you are lucky, under Windows and with a Fat32 partition, you can simply copy everithing; a bit harder with a Ntfs partition: you log on as an administrator user and take ownship of all directories and files you need to copy. Remember that Windows Acl is quite cucumbersome at first glance: e.g., you have to set different permissions to write a file, to read a file, to reach a file and to pass through all folders containing it. Moreover, Windows XP Home can set them only in Safe mode; XP Pro and any Vista shouldn't have any limit.
A tool like Acl View may be useful, since it can preset some settings and works fine on XP Home too, without the need of booting in Safe Mode.

Okay, the drive currently has a horribly corrupted copy of XP (believe me, there is no way I can boot this drive) home on it and it's partitioned as an NTFS drive.
Whenever I attempted to modify permissions on the server, I was the administrator/owner. What I want to do since there is nothing sensitive on the drive is make it so that everyone can get full access to the drive and do whatever they want with it (EG. anybody can read/write, view, modify or delete files)

Hmm: perhaps Acl View may work for you. Select the drive and press the "Wizard" button (a Xmas tree near a wand): in the new windows, apply settings to "This folder, subfolder and files" and select everything (Read, Write, Execute, ...), then confirm: never tried (changing ACLs this way is a bit dangerous on a working partition because Windows may be not too happy, it should be safer on a data-only drive like your), I hope it works.

Yes: Windows 2000/XP/2003. I think it works on server versions too.

Well then we will have to wait until the system completes it's weekly backup cycle. That's going to be at least an hour.

Ok. Sorry but I can't wait for long, it's about 1 am here: if you need it, I can help you tomorrow.

You might have better luck with BART-PE. It tends to ignore permission issues on drives that are not its boot drive.

For example, I copied a customer directory structure to my server during a service operation. One of the folders is named "con" which is a DOS reserved name. I cannot delete this folder from the server, so I boot BART and delete it manually.

For the rare instances where BART refuses to talk to the disk, I use NTFS4DOS. This is an NTFS r/w driver that boots off a DOS diskette and allows full r/w access to NTFS volumes. You can kill or copy ANYTHING on the disk using this app.

As soon as I put something warm on I went into the server room (It's freezing in there!) and gave it a shot. I think I did work it as a few moments after I mailed my friend to try again he logged in and my internet connection suddenly started to get raped.

i know this sounds really weird, but when I used Vista on a new compy, it could use my old hard drive's files and ignore the permissions/change the permissions. Awkward.
