    Pata/Sata converter anyone?

    Hello,
I want to use the ST500LM012 SEAGATE [SATA II HD 2.5" 5400RPM] in a old PC with PATA cable.
So I need this converter from PATA to SATA II.

But there are no report in the entire web that say: Yes, I've done it, it works.

Can you please tell me as much as you know about this kind of conversion.

    Some info of my pc.
    http://support.hp.com/ie-en/document/bph07843

I don't have the SATA HD, not even the converter.

    Thank you.

      they do work.
      one thing to remember,
that board is designed for a 3.5" drive.
when you plug it onto a 2.5" drive it will be hard to mount.

you may be better with the type that plugs into the motherboard and connects to the drive using a sata cable.

those adapters come in a lot of shapes and sizes for different aplications.

looking at the motherboard specs, it's only ata100
you may be better off using a SATA pci card.

Thanks. I can buy the metal plates to adapt the 2.5" in the 3.5" slot.
Can you suggest a SATA pci card?

I have one hdd adapted the other way (an IDE HDD on a SATA motherboard), in my server. It's in RAID 1 with a newer SATA HDD. It works with no problems
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Thank you c_hegge, can you post a pic of yours so I can buy the one that look closer?

There will be OS and data in the SATA hd, and it will be the only hd in the system.

                Re: Pata/Sata converter anyone?

I've used the kind that plugs into the PATA header and provides 2 SATA ports (Startech.com makes them, others make them with only one SATA port). I've had good luck; SATA I and ATA-133 are the exact same speed anyway.

Yes and no. You'd need an offset adapter, however I've never actually seen one. One such would stick the drive to the left side of the adapter, probably screwing onto the bottom of the drive rather than sides.

As you can see here, when centered (like the adapters I've seen do) the SATA connectors don't line up, instead it has to be aligned all the way to the left.

Just use a SATA PC card they dirt cheap and would be faster than a IDE to SATA adapter.

as long as it has a bootrom on it.

It doesn't need a bootrom (why you would think that is beyond me). Most PC's will see a PC card and allow interrupts for disk controllers to be passed through and be bootable, I have a half dozen on my bench to prove it.

^Not the cheapass via cards at least. Not in 2007 or so anyway. Not bootable. Better cards, sure.

Yup. I've also seen VIA SATA cards which were not bootable.

                            EDIT: And owned one.

any motherboard that's old enough to only have ATA100 is unlikely to have any code in the bios to boot from SATA or even know what that is.

i hope this does not turn into another "anything older than c2d is junk for the skip" type threads!

waaa, u guys are lucky to have gotten your hands on working pata/sata converters. there's lots of fake pata/sata converters in my area almost as bad as fake caps around ebay.

anyway, none of the pata/sata converters i got would work reliably. first one i bought was a converter u attach to the board, couldnt detect my sata2 hdd. inserted jumper to limit the drive to sata1 and drive was detectable but speed and transfer rate were unstable. ruled out that the sata cable is faulty. works fine when connected directly to another sata motherboard.

next, when i tried a pata drive connected to a sata motherboard, the sata board simply could not recognise the pata drive. it just stuck at detecting the drive for several seconds then gave up and said "no drive detected at port".

also, another pata/sata converter (the type that is attached to the drive) killed one of my 2tb hard drives because it couldnt supply enuff current to the drive. drive kept clicking. smart failure detected. seek error rate out of spec. drive head failure. bye bye data. it was good to have had you.

                                poor me!

                                  Quite similar to ChaosLegionnaire.
Bought and adapter quite similar to the one in post #1 and there are problems.
Bought a different hd, different from the one in post #1.

                                  Here's the full description.

Sorry for posting elsewhere but I need much more people to read about this problem.

                                  Using the old PATA now.

I have a few SATA MB -> PATA drive converters, every single one work perfectly. They even worked for CDROM/DVD drives. On the other hand, I have one PATA MB -> SATA drive converter. This didn't work so well, but didn't play with it much.

Yes and via SATA PCI boards are trouble... then again it seemed to work ok on a via motherboard... or perhaps I'm imagining things.

i have seen some adapters running on 5v when they should have a 3.3v regulator on the board.
they run real hot and die after a few monhs.

now the bitch is, the boards had the pads for a regulator, but the input and output had simply been bridged to save money!
