    Movie Server.......revisited

Ok...in my quest for a way to put all my DVDs in one spot, I've come up with a twist.....

Just to give some background.....my first attempt was the Sony 300+1 DVD changer. Other than it going tits up after2 years, it was acceptable. Then I got the Sony 400 DVD changer. POS from the start. Sony eventually bought it back because they were as tired as I was of sending it back and forth for repair.

Then I thought about an HTPC......ooooooo......coooooool.....but haven't been able to get it together HW-wise. My limitation seems to be output HW.

So....then I got me a couple PS3s....... .....Home Media!!!!! ....but still....how to get the DVDs to file......hmmmmm.....conundrum. Build a big ass PC with shit-tons of storage. Then I can fold with it too....

Ok....now....what about NAS????? Still sounds like the previous setup, but without the folding ability.

I'm still trying to find a good way to rip DVD to disk without sacrificing quality. Once I find that, I suppose 90% of the work will be done.

ANyway....I've got a wired gigabit ethernet set up. While I do "work" with network attached storage, I really don't know much about it, i.e., type of OS, cost of OS, etc.

    So......any ideas??????

    Note to self.......

Using Daniusoft DVD Ripper......ripping to MPEG-4 AVC, no video....only audio. Also, don't have proper player/codec to play via PC.
Will try using different MPEG-4 selection next.

hmmmmm.....why do I feel like Dr. Frankenstein?????

    also......
    rip and encode times:
    P4-3G......approx. 7hrs
    Core2Duo 3.0GHz......6ish hrs.....
    Core2Quad.....2.6GHz......about 2 hours.....

Conclusion: we need more quad core Intels.

      http://www.origenae.com/en/htpc_s21t.htm
      http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Origen_ae/S21T

      and one of these http://www.3ware.com/
and a bunch of these http://www.wdc.com/en/products/index.asp?cat=2

and since they have 1tb sataii drives now you dont need to sacrifice quality
its gonna be a hell of a lot faster also without doing all that encoding

yeah Will....those are purdy.....but not really practical. They are very expensive and won't hold all the do-dads I want.

It won't be in view of anything. My PS3 is what I'll use to view the movies. It sees the media server (a PC tucked away somewhere) over the LAN and plays them.

Was talking with a coworker today and it seems the best course of action is another c2q box with 6 500+ GB Seagate SATA2 drives in a RAID5 for the movie storage. I'll have some little IDE HD for the OS and little utilities for ripping DVDs. The RAID5 will look like one big TB+ drive with all the movies (as MPEG4AVC) in the root dir. Then I just use the PS3 nav bar and go to that server for movies and pick which one I want to watch. I can even make playlists. I will then have the convenience of the aforementioned DVD carousels without the bullshit that went with them; slow access time, having to type in titles by hand, no playlist, poor movie shuffle, non-alphabetical listing.....just to name a few.
