    need options on IDE issue

OK here is the problem I am having I have a Foxconn - WINFAST 748K7AA motherboard and when i hook up the drive it says no 80wire ide cable is used however they are 80wire cables any thoughts on this? I have tryed a couple of different cables with no luck

    Thanks,
    yonu

I don't know anything about that board specifically, but 80wire cables are fragile. Are the cables you tried new, or are they old ones? They use solid core wire, which deteriorates after it gets bent too many times.

But I'm probably on the wrong track. I think there's a specific pin responsible for detecting an 80wire cable, and it's unlikely both cables would be broken in exactly the same place. My only guess would be a bad solder joint on the board.

I've seen 80wire cables that are made of stranded wire, too. Either way, they're fragile and too much tension can easily damage them (especially at the edges).
could be a ground/shielding issue as well.

          it is actually 4 drives
          they are
          Maxtor 2B020H1
          Maxtor 6L200R0
          Maxtor 6L300R0
          HP DVD Writer 630c

and both IDE channels give the issue
and one cable is new the other one is old

          Thanks,

            Know what.
I would take a close look at your capacitors.
Particularly those near your chipset and IDE connectors.
            -
I had a board with one bad cap in the IDE that if I connected any drive to the second IDE port then it would detect no drives at all present on either connector.
Disconnect the second IDE port and it worked fine using the first port.

Hey! You've got one of those, too, eh? Mine is full of donated boards that have no urgency in their recap. And, they're boards that I likely will not profit from, and so do not see the need to spend the money in caps to fix them.

well Guys I feel real stupid and this is also the last time I chance IDE cables at 2 in the morning turns out they were 40wire cables the system I has having trouble with is the server for my home automation and whole house audio so I only work on it after everyone has gone to bed so needless to say I walk into the server closet and look on the shelf are 2 80wire cables so i slide the cover off the case and look and yeap there are 2 40 wire cables in the system apparently when I changed out a drive a couple weeks ago I screwed up and put the old cables back in.

                  so i feel extremly stupid,

                  Thanks for the help,
