    Sony DRU-800A

My good old Sony burner is acting up. It will not read some of the data DVD's that were make by it now. The other "junk" drive will read them just fine. As I am a heavy smoker could the optics in the drive just need a cleaning? If this be the case would a Q-tip and some alchohol do the trick?

It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

its worth a shot, but usually the nicotine does damage and builds crud in places that you cant clean.

Thanks Topcat. I do see your point. The thing had a bad price tag when new but not now. I think a better replacement drive can be had for $50 today. Maybe I should pour a cold "Bud" in it. Its tired and just wants a cold one now Mate!

Try cleaning the lens with a cotton swab (yeah, Q-tip) and a lot of isopropyl alcohol. Household alcohol is better than nothing but it can be slightly more aggressive than isopropyl, depending on what kind of additives are into.

@ KC8: I'm a teetotaller, I never drink alcoholic beverages nor I suggest to do.
I didn't realize "household alcohol" doesn't mean cleaner with denatured ethanol used at home but alcoholism at home, so I apologize for my mistake.
I thought household was a good translation for italian adjective casalingo, a 360 degrees word referring to house-made (house-made cooking such as house-baken bread) or house-related objects (e.g. kitchen furnitures, dishes, pots, decorations) and people working at home. I was wrong.

So, my advice is to clean the dvd lens with a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol: other cleaners may work but YMMV.

Here! Here! Well put Kc8adu. What brand of beer do you like best? I'll check my local store and see if they stoch it. They carry brands from all over the world.
