    Need drivers.... again....

Got an IBM Thinkpad R51 that came in this morning for a reformat and Windows XP Pro reinstall. Got one problem with the video driver.... I can't find it on the IBM website .

The laptop's model number is 1829-EM2. From what I can see, it uses a Radeon 7500 graphics card.... that Windows is available in Windows, but once I select that driver, it can see 32MB of VRAM and then after a reboot, I can't see anything on the display unless I go into safe mode.
Any way that I can find a working 7500 ATi Radeon driver? User has no intention for gaming, only internet surfing, music and MSN messenger. The owner wants to pick it up tomorrow because she's extra desperate for her laptop so I'm under immense pressure to get drivers for it by 10AM tomorrow morning when it gets picked up. Currently 12.11AM, so time is running short.

    Thanks.

Not to worry, Stevo found the drivers and everything is working fine again.

    Thanks.

Well if you find that you need those ATI Radeon drivers again I have them here on disk. I'm using that same card right now. I could email it to you.

I remember getting frustrated with IBM about video drivers for an A20/21m (8MB ATI Rage something).
I set up an A21m for my sister, and the driver was having issues in games. The older driver on my A20 worked fine, but IBM removed it from the web site. Only the new, broken one was available.

I hate it when they do that.
          Not real brite actually.

I had an version issue with some FIC a P3 boards.
(Making up the version numbers, don't remember for sure.)
Version 42 - Did not support PIII-S or drives over 128Gb.
Version 43 - Supported PIII-S but not drives over 128GB.
Version 44 - Supported drives over 128GB but not PIII-S.

Most of the obscure drivers you require can be found in the various Driverpacks available at www.driverpacks.net

I unpack each .7Z file to its respective subdirectory so the INF files can be searched.

To find a required driver, open the WinXP device manager and find your device. Open the Details tab, find the VEN_ DEV_ and SUBSYS_ data. These three ID fields are present in the INF file.

I wrote a utility program to recursively scan the INF files looking for all three data points on the same line of an INF file. Very often the SUBSYS data is not an exact match, so I allow for a ' * ' wild card in the SUBSYS field, to match all entries. When you find an INF line that has all three on the same line, that is your file. Copy that Driverpack directory to your hard disk, and do a Driver Update from that directory.

The Windows Search can also search INF files, but only for a single data point. Use the DEV_xxxx field to narrow it down. Then open each displayed INF file to see if all three fields match.

specific laptop drivers are a PITA...

just try to find a driver for an 8MB "S3 Savage IX"...
was used in various thinkpads (PIII era) and in the Toshiba Satellite Pro 43xx series.

Win9x drivers? no problem... but try to find a *working* Win2k/XP driver

the ones i've found so far are buggy as hell -.-

drv1: 2D works fine, 3D completely f*cked up (you cant even watch movies because of the lack of hardware acceleration.. ends up in a diashow, missing textures in any program/game that uses 3D)

drv2. 2D kinda buggy (black shadows when moving windows, random graphic bugs, system freezing now and then) but 3D works suprisingly good (if the sys doesn't lock up before you can start any 3D app ... -.-)

newest drivers i could find were 2003-ish ...
i'm still stuck with the driver behaving like described in "drv1"... :/

kinda sad.. the machine itself is pretty good
(PIII 750, 576MB RAM (2x256 +64MB onboard) 20GB HDD, Combo drive (read DVDs, burn CDs))
