    External HDD concerns.

I bought an el cheapo external 3.5" HDD enclosure and I'm a bit concerned about it. As some of you may know, I got a 250GB WD2500 HD a few days ago. Well that went into the external HD enclosure. I've got a problem though.... the HDD enclosure has to air holes or anything for the HD to breathe. Once the HD is installed, it sits in there really tightly and even touches very firmly with the HD enclosure casing (heatsink effect maybe?). Well, that's one concern I have.... will my HD die from overheating?

Anyway, second concern is the PSU.... it looks wimpy and small. Quite light as well (may indicate undersized components being used?). It gets quite hot when I use the HDD as well which is what's concerning me.... I'm afraid that this power brick might fail catastrophically and also destroy the HD and my PC in the process. I wonder If there are aftermarket HDD enclosure PSUs out there?

Should I be concerned about this HDD enclosure? I got it for $20, which is a decent price I'd have to say. I was planning to buy a Vantec Nexstar CX one on the day, but none of the stores had them so I chose this generic USB 2.0 HDD enclosure.

    Thanks.

      It's aluminum --- heatsink effect.

Look for an Acomdata one. I have this really, really nice one with USB and FireWire. It came with both cables included, they are really really thick, the best quality cables I have ever seen, and the PSU feels solid (albeit it is a little light). The build quality is top-notch and inside the box there was this little piece of paper that said "We hope you will enjoy this product for years to come" or something like that. Nobody ever says that anymore!

Here's the link to the one I have. Amazon has it for $38 but I paid $33 at Fry's.

          case mod
          http://picasaweb.google.hr/i4004b3/P...PenghongComCn#
but this one wasn't touching the hdd inside.
it got pretty warm to the touch, and i didn't like it.
holes and the fan reduced case temp. by 10°c and 15-20°c the hdd temp.
(recent versions of everest should be able to monitor temp of usb hdds...although it doesn't work with all usb-sata(or ata) bridge chips inside these cases)
in the winter, i would say now it doesn't ever go over ambient temp.
i would need to check that, though...

those psus are crap indeed, so at least don't keep it on all the time...piut a mains siwtch on the cable, or keep unplugging it after use...
