    Which xeon 604 do buy...

    Well, as some of you may have found out already I have a addiction to dual processor systems. I just bought a IBM intellistation Z-pro 6221 dual socket 604 motherboard, the original manual from the IBM site states it came with a 2 2.4's, 2 2.67's, 2 2.8B's, 2 3.06's, 2 3.2's (1 meg and 2 meg versions), and it said you may require a bios update to operate faster processors.

    Now, on fleabay, I found 2 matched 2.8ghz 604 xeons for $25, and 2 matched 3.06's for $20. That confused me, is there some strange reason why maybe the 2.8's are faster than the 3.06's?

    Check the FSB: the 3.06 cpus have a 533 MT/s fsb which is supported by the board, the 2.8 ones may be 533 (Gallatin core) or 800 (Nocona), the latter being unsupported.

      Quick search on cpu-world shows that they are both 533 fsb. The 3.06 is a prestonia core, as with the 2.8. I'm just wondering if those 2.8's will work with it, it says it supports 2.8b's, not just 2.8's.

      ***EDIT***

      The 2.8 with the 533MT/s fsb, like the ones i found, are 2.8B's. The regular 2.8's have a 400MT/s fsb

        There are a lot of 2.8 GHz Xeon cores according to Wiki:
        - the Prestonia core (similar to P4 Northwood, 512 KB of L2 cache) with 2.8 (400 MT/s, socket 603) and 2.8B (533 MT/s, socket 604): the former is a "budget" version of the latter and fits into a socket 604;
        - the Gallatin core (Prestonia + 1 MB of L3 cache): 2.8B (533, socket 604) and MP 2.8 (400, socket 603);
        - the Nocona core (similar to P4 Prescott): the 2.8 standard voltage and low voltage (both 800);
        - the Irwindale core (Nocona with double L2 cache: Prescott 2M?): 2.8 standard voltage (800);
        - the Paxville core (similar to P4 D Smithfield): 2.8 and DualCore 7030 (both 800, socket 604).

        For your board only the Prestonia and the Gallatin one will work: what are the S-Spec numbers of cpus?

          That one, the 2.8 Prestonia core

          thats the 3.06 prestonia core xeon.

          Well, I guess I am going to get the 3.06ghz, its a prestonia core and is faster and cheaper. IDK, the seller of the 2.8's seems to have a better rep, and has actual pictures up. The one for the 3.06's has a picture off intel's website and a picture of the back of the two.
