Yeah, once you get out of the SOHO market, their kit tends to require a bit more care to coerce to doing what you want. I always use the console interface to do the configuration (often, you can't get the web interface to come on-line without knowing the original IP, etc. -- or, it may have been deliberately disabled by the BUSINESS that had used it, previously).

Last time I did this, I had to manually delete "files" from the device in order to make room to upload the new image (consumer kit would have done that FOR me).

I'll be converting another 1142 to autonomous mode in the near future so I will try to take notes on the process -- refreshing my memory of past efforts along the way.

If I connect the 'brick' to console, it just rolls through some weird boot loop. I'm not able to login to it at all. Not sure if its recoverable or not. I have one more like it, and then the 2 good ones. Wrecking the older/lower end ones isn't a big deal....but I'll be a little more attentive with the next one.

Picked up another cheap BP6 on ebay....didn't need another one, but it was cheap....

It came today. board will only POST with one CPU at a time (in either socket), but will not POST with both CPU's. CPU2 fan header is dead. Original jpcon/jackcon caps appear ok, but I'm 100% positive that they're toast. All these issues are pretty common for the BP6, so this one will make it!

It will need a recap and possibly a transistor or two.

I suspect it is attempting to fetch (via TFTP) a "good" image -- having decided that whatever image it presently contains is bogus (corrupt, wrong version, bad signature, etc.)

You'll need a TFTP service running somewhere on a local 10.0.0/26 network. The AP will reset to 10.0.0.1 and then go looking for a TFTP service. You'll have had to have configured the TFTPd to serve the correct ios file/image.

Once it has retrieved that, it will install it and boot into it. Then, it will be a bit more "sane".

I'll see if I can do my 1142 later today (currently on a wacky sleep/wake cycle so it will be many hours, yet) What model are you playing with? The file names will be different (but not surprisingly). And, the indicators will differ (IIRC, the 1200's had 3 LEDs on the front? the 1142 has just one multicolor LED). I assume you've already got a good console cable (?)

It's usually pretty hard to permanently brick a Cisco AP so its just a matter of trudging through the "fallback" procedure...

The interesting thing is that this specific P-166 is in the same packages as the MMX chips, but a look over the numbers (FV80502166) reveals it to be a normal Pentium non-MMX.

I also have a few ceramic chips - I think a 100MHz, a 120, a 150 and an 166 as well.

AMD wise, most of my chips are K6-2s, but I do have a ceramic (had a gold as well, dunno what happened to that one tho) K5 PR100.


Also, funny thing:

The GPU has a sticker claiming it's a ATI 3D Charger 2MB, but the chipset says it's a Rage II+DVD, and the BIOS claims to be a Mach64.

Lenovo Thinkcentre A70Z AIO. They say it has screen damage but other than a scratched up bezel, it all looks fine from here. $49 shipped, it will be a good replacement for the Polymac G5 in the kitchen (which is a bit anemic to say the least). Also uses a desktop 775 CPU (not a BGA or even a Socket P laptop chip) so if I want to go nuts with it, I can (at least to the extent that the lenovo whitelists will let me).

Just scored an HP Omni 120 AIO for $16 at goodwill. Had the power brick... and it totally runs. Probably not as powerful as the A70Z (uses a 1.7Ghz AMD E2 APU), but it has a bigger screen and doesn't have the troublesome conexant audio from hell.

Usually GW doesn't sell computers (they send them to Dell for recycling instead), but they probably thought it was a TV since it had a DVD drive... Gee, wouldn't be the first time GW thought something awesome was a tiny TV (Topcat, I'm looking at you and your 30" monster).

I was excited to see a Pentium 166, back in 1997, IIRC, LOL (In the Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center group home, at "house #1", in Greenfield, New Hampshire.)

(And I was excited that my family, in Bellows Falls, Vermont, had a Pentium 133!) 1997, IIRC, was the same year that I suddenly knew a lot about MS-DOS and Windows!

In the late-1990s, Linux wasn't my thing, sorry.

I should probably check my closet - I think I have a few ceramic chips there. One might have been a 386 or 486, and the other a Pentium 133 IIRC.... I don't know, been many years since I put these in my closet. Good thing I didn't get rid of them. They fetch a few bucks on eBay just for their gold content... but I'm not gonna crap them for gold - ever. Old hardware like that deserves better.

EDIT: ironically the AUX connectors work, and I get some beeps from the MB - 2 high pitch beeps and 8 normal beeps. Dunno what the former high pitched beeps mean but the latter point to GPU memory error.

Scored a ThinkPad x250 i7-5600u, 16gb DDR3, 500GB 7200RPM HDD for free because the screen is cracked, it came with 2 spare batteries. Also scored 3 extra 500gb 7200 rpm Seagate laptop drives, a Hitachi 7200 rpm 320gb laptop drive and 3 16gb ddr3 laptop ram sticks

Got a freebie from the county today. Some cheapass flimsy case with an Allied 300w PSU, connected to a Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L with a Pentium dualcore @ 2.6, 2gb RAM, and a 250gb SATA seagate 7200.12 HDD. Working order, this post created from it. I wiped the drive as I promised I would, then threw W7 on it.

I'm sure the PSU needs to be recapped, they always do....and these are junk PSU's anyway....but the system seems stable.



Was also given 2x Cisco Aironet 1200 PoE access points.

Ok, this one was boring.....and in a case I didn't really care for....so yea.... I had a little fun with it.

Not a sleeper good enough for it's own thread, but worthy of an honorable mention in this thread.

Old P3-era HP case (Pavilion 7940), it had one of the 'mini' PSU's with an adapter sleeve in it, which was toast and a 667MHz cpu...meh. Ugly cases, but very well built....who'd think there's a newer guts in it. I stuck my last 9800GT in it...anyway:

Looks good from the front....added a card reader to fill that second 5.25" bay.


The old case...Goony, if you still want it, let me know....cover the shipping, its yours...the PSU is included.
