Re: Dell Dimension 1100? ...or is it? The Ultimate Sleeper System

Well, Cyrix was kicking Intel's ass at gaming until Quake came along... Quake's engine used the floating point portion of the CPU in parallel with the main CPU (in a way like hyperthreading), which...

Re: Dell Dimension 1100? ...or is it? The Ultimate Sleeper System

They all graduated with me with BS's in Electrical Engineering Technology. We used to have "computer" in the degree title (as computer engineering is in the department title), but that was reportedly...

Re: Dell Dimension 1100? ...or is it? The Ultimate Sleeper System

Nice. I love sleeper builds. :D

That said, back in college people thought my supermicro cases were "noname junk" (same fools who thought raidmax was a high end brand), so in that vein, all of our...

Re: Ratdude's Main Rig V4.1

...and a year and a half later, I have a use.

I recently bought a house and ended up adding a front entry area LAN connection.

I don't have a desk for her yet, but I do have the other goodies:...

^dang. I love raptors and Velociraptors. Combined with a 3ware 9550 or 9560, they're generally unstoppable.

Re: Looked at new thermostats, nah I'll DIY this

Re: Looked at new thermostats, nah I'll DIY this

Nice. Have you studied control systems before?

You might want to look up Two-Position controls for tuning in your controls. That way you can get it properly "damped", underdamped will be too slow...

Re: Good capacitors to put in HOT fanless PSU?

There is no good cap here. Just bad and worse for 'lytics.

I'd avoid anything not 105C rated. I'd personally suggest Nichicon HE (or UHE, same thing) as that's my go-to PSU recapping cap; I've...

Re: Netra X1 - Sun Microsystems - any use?

Not much. Playing around with different unix/unix-like distributions would be what comes to mind for me.

Re: Use 74LS instead 74HC and 74HCT

Sure. The power consumption will be somewhat higher (but less so at high frequencies) but since you're already running linear 5V, and with comparable switching speeds, I say try it.

Re: Ratdude's 3U Server Shenanigans

Time has passed, I now have a house, and this thing is just too noisy.

I'm biting the bullet and re-fanning it using some Arctic Cooling F8's.

Too bad the stupid fan controller idea didn't...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Linksys EA7500: Same condition as above

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

IDK... it's not at all stable on DVI. VGA works OK... and I cracked open the brick, it's OEM'd by delta.

I'll recap both boards... probably dried up on the control board?

Re: Ratdude's Main rig V2

Finally did a proper full PSU recap using Nichicon HE's... and she's back and stable. Posting from her now.

FYI, there's two 470uf 16V caps, not 1

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

No problems there, but I did see a 47uf 63V LED driver board cap (the only cap on that board) that looked a bit puffy in the bung. Not a size I have either... one cap! :nutkick:

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Will do.

Good case score. My V3 series (and original V5) uses the non-hotswap version. Works great and if you use Arctic Cooling fans its virtually silent (even with SLI'd gtx 250's !).
