Re: Just when you thought polymers gave a PC eternal life!

Honestly they generally aren't too bad in PSUs (definitely better than Capxon, OST, Samwah, etc.) . The only failed Teapos I've seen in PSUs were old and abused (high hour hot running systems). On...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Since I have a 4WD truck with good ground clearance I can generally make it to work without having to clear the driveway (and if we get too much snow for my truck to make it through the office will...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

An Ariens 8524 2-stage snow blower for $110. It needed the usual tune-up stuff (carb kit, spark plug, belts and sheer pins) but after that the Tecumseh Snow-King fires up on the first pull (has...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Depending on the model $200-400, add in an hour or so labor for the repair guy (generally the minimum charge even if it only takes 15 min to swap the board) and you are looking at a $300-500+ repair...

Particularly annoying when the Precision line with similar CPUs/GPUs had plenty of cooling, here's my M4800:

Re: LPK12-450W safety capacitor shorted

At least in the US bonding ground to pipes isn't that uncommon even in "newer" houses. My house was built in 1988 and it has the ground bonded to the incoming water main (though it also has a...

Re: Problem with UPS 850

How old are the batteries and have you checked the voltage? Many (most) UPSs have very "dumb" charging circuits (often only a constant float voltage with no regulation) that will try to charge a...

Re: Post your system.......

I recently upgraded my main laptop to a Dell Precision M4800 after my M4600 unfortunately suffered a broken hinge (my fault a ~4ft. drop on a concrete floor and landed right on the corner ...

A Sony STR-DH130 Frankenreceiver. I pieced this thing together from parts from 3 different scrap receivers, 2 of which had been dropped (1 had a broken main board and the other had a broken VFD, both...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Yes the batteries are good (they're also common 12V 7Ah batteries so replacements should be easy/cheap to get when needed), the unit has a 2018 manufacture date, a company ordered them and then went...

Re: Polk Audio PSW111 Subwoofer - no power

There is a good chance the driver transistors are blown, those polk sub amps are notoriously underbuilt (especially older ones). There may also be conductive glue if it is older (brown glue that...

Re: Delta DPS-360FB A from Dell Studio XPS 435MT

I guess it "won't hurt" to replace them all, but you probably could have left the Chemi-cons (these rarely fail) and the big 680uf 200V Samaxons (looks like this is a PPFC unit so the primaries...

Re: Oscilloscope kits

I built one a while back "just for fun" it is ok for what it is (more of a "toy" than a "real" scope) but the QC concerns are definitely justified as it took me two kits to get one working unit (the...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

It is hard to beat the older stuff for reliability (even if you have to do a re-cap, clean the pots/switches, and replace a few lamps, at least it should be solid afterwards) and I would generally...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Yep, GM seemed to be early with RDS, the first car I ever saw it in was a 2005 Chevy Cobalt we had in Driver's ED (yet oddly the 2007 Pontiac G6 I had in College didn't have it), yet no vehicle I or...

Re: The Hall of Shame - Badcaps Photo Montage

Agreed, it looks like the Panasonic SC-PT 660 (https://www.cnet.com/reviews/panasonic-sc-pt660-review/) is an HTIB (Hone-Theater in a box) system that is barely bigger than a DVD change but claims...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1
