Re: 3300F 450V caps...

how many F is needed to not cause damage and make a difference :D ?

I think a 3.3mF could cause significant damage... granted you have to get unlucky in one direction, most of the cap is...

Re: flourescent ballast resistance

Actually, that PL13 lamp that I was mentioning, has the integral starter... and it's using an electronic ballast!

Re: flourescent ballast resistance

The F15T8 mag ballast I'm pretty sure can be used for PL13, though I have a mag ballast PL13 lamp somewhere...

Also have a PL13 lamp with electronic ballast which I like more because it starts...

Re: 3300F 450V caps...

They do have some heft per unit but not really that much, seen bigger.
Speaking of weight, technically they have a significant amount of aluminum in them, though the electrolyte probably contributes...

3300F 450V caps...

Okay...

I scored a "small" pile of 3.3mF 450VDC(525V surge) 85C electrolytic capacitors, looks like they are "BC" branded capacitors, looks like Vishay bought them. Now...what can I do with...

Re: Reading input and output of bridge rectifier on the same scope?

LOL yes, same as Tek scopes or whatever, all probe shields are connected together through the chassis and most likely the places that will fail given typical scope probes:

a) most likely as OP...

Re: flourescent ballast resistance

I have an extra magnetic ballast for F15T8 that I swapped out, DCR=26Ω

Re: Grr... stupid DPAKs.

hmm... Tried to use my hot air gun on another (scrap) board with a dpak, came right off with no fuss.
I don't think I'll see the same on the motherboard I want to take the mosfet off of (without...

Re: Grr... stupid DPAKs.

Blah, and of course the source pin has a huge pad with PTVs and a through hole capacitor right next to it... Incidentally that capacitor is a solid polymer electrolytic.

holy crap. 200W pencil iron... LOL.
Yes, added leaded solder...hmm.

Grr... stupid DPAKs.

Grr... stupid DPAKs.

Guess what I'm trying to do with them.

Tried a 100W gun... no dice in getting it to budge
45W pencil with a big flat tip... no dice

I'm not sure if I want to salvage...

Re: Cleaning up capacitor leakage

Don't forget try clean water too...especially since failed capacitors tend to use aqueous (i.e. water) electrolytes and water will dissolve it once more.

Re: Short finder

Just need a voltage limited 1A CC PSU (LM317?) and you can read "ohms" (which would be milliohms) directly on your 200mV scale, if you have 20mV, even better.

Trick is not to have to send 1A...

Re: Fixing a multimeter based on VC9805 schematic

Just to be thorough, you should measure the voltage at emitter and collector, if they're about the same or within a half a volt or so and both near the voltage of your battery, then it's not the...

Re: Fixing a multimeter based on VC9805 schematic

what I'm saying is even if it's shorted, it has no affect on the readings you're getting - unless if your battery is dead, so you do not have root cause and there's no need for bypassing.

Re: resistors in parallel ?

Then you'll need a 1.5W 2k2 resistor which rounds up to 2W, and why not buy a 3k 2W resistor to begin with :D
With dissimilar resistors, probably only for last resort or if you have other values to...

Re: Fixing a multimeter based on VC9805 schematic

M6 is a power switch transistor. I'd imagine it is used to shut off the meter if the battery is bad. If it's shorted and the battery is weak, then perhaps this is why you're getting strange...

Re: resistors in parallel ?

Do the math.

BTW, should always do the math. You can even do funny things with nonmatching resistors but yeah it gets complicated when they don't match as the power dissipated will be different...

Re: resistors in parallel ?

And two 750Ω 1W resistors in series would also result in a 1.5KΩ 2W resistance.

Re: Fixing a multimeter based on VC9805 schematic

Note that when measuring IN HI/IN LO pins, you need to use a meter with 1GΩ input impedance, else you will get significant error in the reading. If you only have a 10MΩ input impedance DMM it's...

Re: Ohms Law question - kind of ...

Indeed 0.16Ω is declared to be the minimum resistance of the load for one cell that's printed but couldn't read because the label needs to be rotated a bit...

However if 2 cells are in series,...
