There can be interference from other components sometimes when reading the chip in situ.
Maybe post photos so we can see the differences.

Nope, it's only Apple users getting screwed with soldered SSDs. They are a hardware company that remove the ability for their users to upgrade to gouge even more money and differentiate models.

M2.5X5 is 2.5mm diameter and 5mm length.

I believe nvme screws are M2.0 x 3mm.

There should be no force involved, lift the flap and they should come out easily, inspect the ends for damage.

If we could clearly see the whole strip in one single photograph we could tell you how to test it but we can't.
Scratch off some solder rmask if there are no test points.

The difference between known non conductive metal compounds is a couple of degrees at idle but can be as much as 12c difference at load....

I'm not sure I'd be calling that 20 year old no spec paste "fresh".
A quality made paste with known spec will do a known job. It's why all the pros I know use decent stuff. Yes a little different...

There's no problems recycling lead acid batteries, they have a 90-100% recycling rate making them one of the most recycled items globally, what bit are you wondering about ?

There won't ever be an easy way unless the batteries are deigned for recycling.
There are however a handful of companies that recycle batteries.
