Re: Gateway 80486-DX2/50 Revival

If my 486 had been a desktop, I still have a 400MB (IDE) and 2GB (IDE) rust spinners around. They're in my K6-233 for no particular reason. Also have a few SCSI, a 700MB (SCSI2) and even a 5.25"...

Re: Gateway 80486-DX2/50 Revival

It's running as fast as I remember it... but I never had much software on this computer as it was never a main computer.

I have no network for it yet, but supposedly I did save a copy of the wifi...

Re: Gateway 80486-DX2/50 Revival

Yay was able to extract win95 from the failed CDRs and got a basic install on my 486dx4/75 on a 512M CF card. At 16MB RAM, don't think I'd want anything newer.

Now need to find drivers...

Re: Help with blowing transistor NAD T752 receiver

Probably not -- they designed it such that it's impossible to fry finals by setting the idle current wrong. Normally shorting or turning all the way down of the idle current pot - R522 - would...

Re: Help with blowing transistor NAD T752 receiver

No, I'm pretty sure it's simply disassembly-reassembly sloppiness.

Re: Pinout of TV antenna cable

I was thinking rotator wire too, and indeed they do make rotators for broadcast... so much that I thought hams decided to repurpose broadcast rotators for amateur use...

Re: Fish Tank LED Power Supply Gets Hot then shuts down

No, I'm curious why it's drawing 28W on the 5V line :D

Re: Help with blowing transistor NAD T752 receiver

It depends on how many watts you're trying to pump into the speakers. At lower volumes, low impedance speakers won't do much more harm than running higher impedance speakers at higher volume. ...

Re: hard drive logic board Diode identification

I ended getting a 12v to 5v dc-dc converter. It didn't work, output was shorted. Turns out there was a zener crowbar that was fried and melted the plastic case.
Oddly enough it isn't obviously...

Re: Fish Tank LED Power Supply Gets Hot then shuts down

Take the lamp apart and see how it's wired. Using that much +5 when +12 is available is kind of weird.

Re: hard drive logic board Diode identification

I was recently looking at my Antec NeoHE "modular" and a random SATA power cable that seemingly uses the same connector. As skeptical as I usually am I tried tracing the wires on the cable, and lo...

Re: Help with blowing transistor NAD T752 receiver

A removed Q528 would simply cause silence on the center channel.
BTW are you testing with the speaker attached or not? The protection system doesn't necessarily protect against all DC conditions.

Re: Help with blowing transistor NAD T752 receiver

Can't believe this amp is so much bad news... Likewise other channels, R573 is also a symptom of frying finals, and I'm beginning to think reassembly/disassembly is putting a toll on the boards...

Re: Gateway 80486-DX2/50 Revival

The Weitek was not a 487 or a 486, that was something different. It's not a "performance penalty" rather it's simply slower due to the lower clock rate than the higher clocked 486DX2 or 486DX4.

Re: Help with blowing transistor NAD T752 receiver

Something still doesn't seem right, if you were monitoring the voltage across the resistor and shut down immediately if you saw anything but a few millivolts, should have been able to save it. ...

Re: Gateway 80486-DX2/50 Revival

Windows? What's Windows?
The K6-233 is running Linux (and DOS...)

BTW seems a lot of older 486 boards have a coprocessor socket for 487's... which only makes sense if the main processor socket...

Re: laptop vs desktop rust spinner longevity

Can't say that's true, they all will fail at some point.

Hmm... my WD Green 2TB HDD (3.5", which incidentally gets 120MB/sec sequential - probably one of my slower 2T disks) in my PVR now is 83K...

Re: Gateway 80486-DX2/50 Revival

I have an old gateway p5/90 case that looks very similar to this 486dx2-50...full size AT case, board is long gone. It has a K6-233 (with 256MB SDRAM on a 430TX...) board in it now.

Alas no...

Re: laptop vs desktop rust spinner longevity

Doing sequential reads from the Green AV disk doesn't seem that spectacular.
The Enterprise WD disk and one of the two Blue WD disks seems to be the two that stand out in sequential reads at around...

Re: laptop vs desktop rust spinner longevity

I ended up getting a bunch of old WD disks recently, and now have two blues (different models -- one is faster than the other), an enterprise, and two greens. One of the two greens is an "always on"...

Re: Help with blowing transistor NAD T752 receiver

Now for debugging stuff like this you need all those jumpers again so you can measure voltages...

And the right tool for this is probably an oscilloscope (and a sine wave signal generator) so you...

Re: A Cautionary Tale - Alli Express

I wonder if those chips are even real, sometimes I wonder if sellers assume you can't do anything with BGA chips and send you dummy chips and hope you just eat the loss from the order mistake... ouch.
