Re: Antec TruePower 380p failed after intermittent supply, suspect MOV

Yes, it can be measured in circuit. The actual resistance depends on the specific part, but 22 ohms is credible. However, if it is cracked it is damaged and should be replaced. The cause of the...

Re: Antec TruePower 380p failed after intermittent supply, suspect MOV

Thermistors sometimes crack or blow apart is there is a really high current short further into the circuit, e.g. a shorted bridge rectifier or switch device. So you have a bad thermistor and some...

Re: Panasonic FC series - leaking? quality gone?

It was back in 2008, I think, but in my ripple current torture testing at Curtis Instruments I beat the @#$% out of some samples of polymers and they just kept working, deteriorating very slowly.

Re: Panasonic FC series - leaking? quality gone?

The PR and PL series were obsoleted some 15 years ago by Nichicon due to RoHS. PL was resurrected as the PM series; Nichicon intended to leave the PR series in its grave but resurrected it due to...

Re: PowerBook M4896 Adapter

Thanks for the feedback! The flyback topology is pretty stressful for output capacitors, and at over 23 years old replacing them was probably a prudent move, assuming you used good parts.

Re: PowerBook M4896 Adapter

Going by a couple of date codes I'm going to guess it was built in May, 1997. That means you could have electrolytic caps that have dried out, going high ESR. Checking to see if the fuse is open is...

Re: Tech Tutorial: Choose the correct capacitors for reliable automotive applications

Boschert used to have thermal switches on the L-brackets of many of their OL series power supplies. Back in ancient times ....

Re: KDMPower MIPC MI-X8775CD [PCB WF-C rev:E]

When Motorola introduced their Switchmode series BJTs - 2N654x in TO-3 (actually, TO-204) and MJE1300x in TO-220 - they were the first BJTs optimized for use in switchmode power supplies. So they...

Re: How bad electrolytic cap behaves in a circuit

Well, the bad capacitor doesn't do what it is supposed to do, or it does something it should not.

If it fails short circuit things may blow up or a fuse may blow or a power supply's over-current...

Re: Tech Tutorial: Choose the correct capacitors for reliable automotive applications

Long, long ago when I worked at Boschert we built up a prototype of a 750W P/S. We didn't have the inrush thermistors we needed, so we installed what was used in Boschert's OL400 series, 400W. We ran...

As soon as I saw the thread title and didn't remember I'd posted it I knew it had to be quite a while ago.

Re: Sorting out old PC power supplies?

The -5V location is empty, so it should be OK with a MB that doesn't use -5V and with your tester.

Re: Sorting out old PC power supplies?

If it has an orange wire in the -5V location in the 20- or 24-pin connector it is incompatible with MBs that use the standard ATX pin-out. The only computer company I've seen use that location for an...

Re: Sorting out old PC power supplies?

2007 vintage, probably 300W or 350W. Passive PFC. Looks like it's forward converter topology. For lower end off-the-shelf PSUs Delta probably would have used a 384x PWN and a Power Integrations...

Re: Sorting out old PC power supplies?

I think I recognize the logo for Uppermost Electronic Industries on one of the parts. Definitely an MOV. Among surge suppressor diodes, MOVs, and gas discharge tubes, MOVs are faster than the tubes,...

Re: Suggest alternate to LM317?

The LM317 (and the LM337, for negative voltages) is one of those parts that works too well to be obsoleted. Easily adjusted for a fixed voltage or with a pot for adjustable voltages. You can even put...

Re: LiteON PA-2311-02A blown fuse solved (iMac 27")

Gate resistors control how fast a MOSFET turns on and off. Too fast can cause noise problems. Turning off too fast can turn the MOSFET back on again due to the Miller capacitance.

The gate...

Re: Fake Nichicon PS series?

Unless Nichicon changed the color of their sleeving for the PS series in the past 10 years, the black sleeving is the wrong color. Should be brown.

Re: Caps With High uF

IIRC, if a 'lytic cap measures well out of tolerance high that means the aluminum oxide dielectric layer has thinned, increasing the capacitance, but reducing its actual breakdown voltage. The...

Re: Wanting To Try Something With Extra Capacitors for my original xbox

Increasing the capacitance will not improve anything. OTOH, you are messing with a carefully designed network that probably has capacitors of multiple types, values, impedance characteristics, and...
