Re: What 2.5 inch HDD for server?

That's why I am asking about first hand experience. Sometimes there is something that is not written on the specs page. Firmware problems, other issues and problems. Lower than advertised MTBF and...

Re: What 2.5 inch HDD for server?

SSD-s have limited writes. There will be constant writes and reads. I am afraid that the SSD-s won't survive.
And the SSD-s that can survive for at least 3-4 years are 4x the price.
I still do not...

Re: AMD AthlonXP multipliers on old motherboards...

You can try increasing the FSB. Although on these old boards it is most likely that FSB is tied to the frequency of the AGP/PCI and dramatically changing the FSB would lead to AGP/PCI cards running...

Re: Question on AC grounding - found an old device that has me confused

These are only excuses. The weight matters only in USA. For example, our outlets and extension cords are exclusively Shucko /Well, sometimes Europlug can be seen for smaller devices/. Nobody will...

Re: Need LAN connection over several hundred meters - how to do this?

Then you have no other option, rather than either WLAN or eventually Powerline. Omni or panel antenna BS AP + panel or directional client AP-s.

Re: Need LAN connection over several hundred meters - how to do this?

It's very simple. The maximum length of cable in one network segment is 100m.
Use POE and put 3 switches, if it is inside a building.
Powerline is also an option, although you have to test it....

Re: Packet loss on LAN...

Care to share? Or clarify?
Or you just use ping -f -i -l?
Because otherwise ping usually waits for the reply before sending another request.

Re: Packet loss on LAN...

I ignored nothing.
1. Ping DDOS works by sending ICMP packets using to the broadcast address of a network, using spoofed IP - the IP of the attacked host.
This is amplification attack.
2. Far...

Re: Packet loss on LAN...

Better copying a file over the network, while simultaneously pinging the other computer. Losses in a bad network tend to appear, when the consumed bandwidth increases. It is not very sophisticated...

Re: Packet loss on LAN...

A standard ICMP packet is 74 bytes or 592 bits. If you send 1 packet per second, this is 592 bits/sec.
How many pings simultaneously do you think you need to bottleneck even a 10Mbps network...

Re: Question on AC grounding - found an old device that has me confused

Only the ground terminal of an outlet can be connected to the chassis of a device, if it is not ClassII - Double insulated. This is wrong. Perhaps it relies on a plug with a 3rd dummy pin, so you...

Re: <taps> So long, Pentium III, Athlon XP, and older...

Base OS do not require SSE2, but browsers do require it. SSE2 is not a new thing. Even Win7 supported until recently processors without SSE2. SSE2 instruction set is more than 15 years old. Why are...

Re: Packet loss on LAN...

10Mbps is 1.25MB/sec. It's not fast at all, but I would not dismiss any network problems. Losses in any network are because of some problem, not the nature of the network, unless they are accounted...

Re: Packet loss on LAN...

I think that it is needless to say that you can buy 1Gbps 8 port switch for 20$ or less.
And 100mbps are even cheaper. As cheap as 7$
