Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Scored a sad looking Acer 2930.

T5800, 250GB HDD, 2GB of RAM, and a Lite-On/Philips DVD-RW drive. 12.1' CCFL screen is smashed, KB has missing keys (KB should be easy to replace since it's the...

Re: Samsung NP300E5C-S01PT (BA41-01979A) Turn Off after some minutes [Motherboard]

I know this thread is old but I have finally found the reason the NP300E will shut down:

"The Platform Controller Hub (PCH or chipset traditionally) is a chip which is soldered to the motherboard...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Turion based DV6000s are a literal plague, at least for me.
The Intels are sweet if they're the PM965 variants. I have 2 of those (one has a Pentium T4300 and the other a C2D T6500), both have...

Re: WD drive "colors"

Black Scorpios are all 7200s. I have at least two of them, and even searching WD Scorpio Black on Google gave me only 7200RPM results for 2.5' drives. Likewise, all Blue Scorpios seem to be 5400RPM....

Re: WD drive "colors"

Honestly this is what I know pretty much about WD's color codes:

RE series - Enterprise drives, pretty much similar to Seagate's Barracuda ES/Constellation series. Can be used as daily consumer...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Today's scores:

Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li3710 - had broken DC jack, thankfully I easily fit a Acer DC jack in there and works fine. Originally had 2GB of RAM, Celeron M 900, 160GB HDD. New specs...

Re: The Ace Lap Fleet

Thing is I can actually find good C2D CPUs (except Core 2 Quads, I haven't seen any trace of these in the wild at all) but the prices people ask for them are as high as 1st or 2nd gen i3 or i5s.

Re: The Ace Lap Fleet

It's limited to 6GB due to some missing traces on the PM45 chipset, as well as BIOS.

Same goes for my 8930G but in its case there is a certain revision that supports quad core CPUs and 8GB of RAM.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Scored these yesterday:

Acorp 5VIA3P - VIA VPX chipset, Socket 7. Had slightly rusty pins (about 3, and unimportant ones at that) on the southbridge but otherwise it booted first try using P166...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Now you made me wonder what that "8700M GT" I have in my ASUS RoG G70S is capable of.

First off, card looks something like this:

I also have the 9500GT in both the 512 and 1GB flavours, Leadtek and Gigabyte :)

momala - 512MB, don't exactly remember right now but it was either GDDR2 or DDR3. (or even GDDR3 if such thing...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Nice to see a HD3850 show up, the oldest card from the HD series that I have is a 4850 from ASUS. Haven't got around doing a build with it yet, but I do have an H55 based 1156 board that I should put...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Managed to find a ASUS RoG G70SG at the trash, pretty gutted sadly.

I managed to salvage a G84 based Geforce 8700M GT (which surprisingly works despite the crudely scribbled "DOES NOT POST - NO...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Maybe you've done it already, but did you remove the clock cap? Anything older than a 1.6 is crucial to have its cap removed (or replaced, but I wouldn't the slightest recommend that, even if it's...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Another score:

Toshiba A200-1AG. T5500, 2GB RAM, Geforce Go 7300, 160GB Toshiba HDD, Windows 7.

GPU needed a light reflow, works great now. I was thinking of replacing it with a HD2400 but I...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Scored a ASUS K73BY for free.

6600mAh battery that I can only presume is aftermarket (though it has amazing charge, and only 1% wear), AMD E-450 CPU and HD6470M GPU (aka 7400M) w/ 1GB DDR3 VRAM,...

Re: The ghetto mod thread

Since I can't edit the previous comment - in regards to your V6000 - don't really bother with it.

The best you may be able to do to it without literally cutting up the case is add a copper shim on...

Re: The ghetto mod thread

An update to my previous comment:

It's pretty hard to cool this 8400M G with just an ABIT cooler it seems. It works but temps now top out at 74*C, which is way out of my comfort zone. I'll...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Might try reflowing the NF7, though I don't have high hopes as the board is slightly warped.

Also forgot mentioning a Creative Labs GB0010 GPU, which is a 3D Blaster Annihilator 2 32MB - aka...

Re: The ghetto mod thread

Yeah, it's running a bit cooler. Not by much (50-60*C usually, with 65*C at load) but much cooler than expected. I might probably redo it though, except with a bit larger HSF (with same low profile)...

More scores:

ASUS K8V-X SE - no CPU, one broken RAM clip, no bad caps tho
Pinnacle AnyTV PCI TV Tuner - uses a S-Video plug for video - anyone know a pinout? It's 4 pin.
Maxtor 4.3GB HDD -...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Scored another Sammy laptop, this time it's a NP300E5C-A05IT. Replaced the Celeron B810 with a i3-2330M, and added a 320GB Seagate Momentus Thin. Flies with Windows 8.1, especially because UEFI.

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

I have a X1650 Pro with that bridge chip and I flat out superglued a nForce 2 southbridge heatsink to it lol

It's been running fine ever since. I also have a HD3450 AGP done in the same way.
