Re: Dummy loads for amplifier fault finding

BTW typically "electronic loads" are meant for testing power supplies. It's nice they are adjustable, but unsuitable/incorrect for speaker outputs. Electronic loads are typically constant power or...

Re: Dummy loads for amplifier fault finding

As frequencies go up, the harder it is to make a dummy load. DC is easiest, audio slightly harder, uhf is tough, microwave is really tough...
inductance in power resistors are lower than actual...

Re: Best video card for 2D?

Wow...so should I be holding onto all my DX11 and older cards for those holdout W7 users out there? :D

Re: PC case - Hard drive rails

There used to be a "standard" - the ones that IBM used for its drives in the IBM AT and XT cases - however at this point with all the clones and ATXs they tend to not be compatible with each other. ...

Re: Log periodic antenna to Coaxial cable... balun right?

Due to the HOA and the government provision to not deny me outdoor OTA antennas, but towers are a no-no. This antenna I picked up is fairly large, so I wonder how well it performs though as a log...

Re: Log periodic antenna to Coaxial cable... balun right?

hmmm what are typical log periodic impedances?

I need to look for a large pipe or something I can use as a mast, and wonder how high I need to have it to exceed performance of indoor rabbit...

Re: What 'class' is this Hill Audio DX3000 Amplifier?

The main characteristic of class B is evident in the design however - since only half of the transistors are on during a specific half of the waveform. Yes this design leaks like a class A but not...

Log periodic antenna to Coaxial cable... balun right?

I acquired a (large) used rooftop log periodic broadcast reception antenna and it didn't come with wiring. I figure I could use it for parts if nothing else but first I'd like to see if this thing...

Re: Line filter question

Indeed the key thing is insulation - the only way you can get devices with only 2 prongs is that it's completely plastic on the outside for insulation as well as full isolation from the internal...

Re: TIP120 Question

IRF620 is only around 10x faster than the TIP120 :)

BTW, this is specific to Darlingtons. I'm pretty sure you can build custom BJT circuits faster than off the shell Darlingtons, after all people...

Re: Line filter question

op should just leave pe open and not modify the caps or internal wiring, and use a GFCI/RCD for safety. Not ideal but should not result in a fried Dannyx.

Re: Line filter question

Right, it runs hot as it will dump heat (yes, they are underspecced for 100% duty cycle) but they do serve a function that a simple resistor can't do...

Re: RF 3 way switch

I don't completely fault ebay other than the exorbitant fees they charge sellers, but there are definitely some sellers that use ebay trying to make a quick buck by exaggerating the description...

Re: Post your worthless and/or pointless repairs

No, not pointless or worthless at all, you saved it from the landfill (unless you paid more for the switch than buying a new heat gun... then it would indeed qualify)!

However... definitely...

Re: Line filter question

Yes you will get a little current through the ground Y capacitors when floating but by design it should not be enough to electrocute. Just leave it and yes you should ground it, but as long as...

Re: TIP120 Question

Compare a TIP120 C-E drop with an IRF620 D-S drop at 5A load ... :D

Yes these things are slow but there have been plenty of SMPS with BJTs, though I can't say, other than the MC34063, many...

Re: Resistor value - color coding

Perhaps key observation: if you have a metallic band and it seems to be first or second band... need to flip the resistor around and try again!

Re: Coolmax RM-850B failure... just wanted to share

Nope! After putting the PSU back into its case, it stopped working. Ugh. Looks like another cold solder joint somewhere... *sigh*

Nice, it was never working. Now I know why the cap vented......

Re: Coolmax RM-850B failure... just wanted to share

Well... Took another look at it...

The solder blob was insufficient! The APFC toroid solder job was poor and it worked its way loose. So I resoldered it and powered on.

Yay 12V, yay 5V!

Re: What 'class' is this Hill Audio DX3000 Amplifier?

Without looking at the schematic, likely Class AB.
AB can also be all NPN or all PNP power transistors.

Now after looking at the schematic, it indeed has a quite unusual design, but seems...

Re: FCL30A015 diode reverse biased shows 35 Ohm, 0.05V forward. Is it gone?

looks shorted to me, the resistance (in resistance mode) should be very high when reverse biased, 35Ω is way too low. 0.05V forward drop not normal either, though lower currents like your DMM should...

Re: Motorcycle flasher mystery.

No
The aspect that it's a diode is inconsequential, the fact that it's an LED that's 4 to 10x more efficient at generating light is the key factor.

Do not go get a pair of 21W super bright LED...

Re: Busted tankless electric water heater control board

Capacitive Dropper PSU? C32 still good?

Anyone find datasheets for the thyristors? Teccor/Littlefuse branded it seems, but is it a real part? fake?
