It seems like this is a Linux Mint 18.0 distribution. Please note that Linux Mint 18 has been out of support for more than a year, you should upgrade to a newer release.

Indeed it does happen (and more commonly blown audio circuit) because sometimes with some combination of cables and adapters, they end up plugging phantom power into the laptop. Still it's very rare...

Shorted high-side MOSFET on VRAM power rail of modern GPUs usually result in both dead VRAM and dead GPU.

Preferable to use the same macOS version between target and host. Or at least having older macOS on the host than the target can definitely cause issues.
