Re: The Hall of Shame - Badcaps Photo Montage

Look like the cause was something other than the caps. I think Nichicon discontinued the PL series something like 15 years ago, so they had a pretty long life.

Re: Replacement cap for Samyoung NXB

Also UCC LXZ series, which is less old than LXV and LXY. LXZ and Nichicon PW series are pretty much direct equivalents.

Nichicon's PA series is less well known but is very good, very similar in...

Re: Late 2011 Macbook pro

My guess is that the processor speed is being throttled to extend battery life. In other words, it is annoying but is working as Apple designed.

Re: Thermaltake 750 smart some resit value

R6 and R6A are in parallel and used for current sense, so they are very low value. Beyond that, :why: .

Re: Replacing low value electrolytics with ceramic?

"COG" and "NPO" are the same thing, probably nomenclature going back more decades than I do (I think I saw the terms used in late 1950s vintage TV technician magazines).

Re: Thermaltake Smart 500W... will the Crapacitors last?

I sent my crystal ball in for repairs and calibration years ago and the repair shop lost it. Sorry.

Guesstimating cap life in a particular piece of equipment is very complex - manufacturer,...

Re: Replacing low value electrolytics with ceramic?

If you can get same value/voltage CGO ceramics, you won't have to worry about the temperature or voltage coefficients. If X7R, then the combined tolerance will be, IIRC, +/-20%. Z5U and Y5V are crap,...

Re: Thermaltake Smart 500W... will the Crapacitors last?

Cooling the bleep out of it may help those caps last a while. 5 years ... wellllllll in a few years I'd buy a batch of appropriate value/voltage PWs or HEs (or the UCC equivalent series).

Re: Pioneer Magnetics PM33 5000W switchmode supply

5,000W power supplies would be well outside of the experience of most folks here. I think the highest I've worked with is 3000W and not from Pioneer Magnetics. My limited experience with Pioneer is...

Re: NCC KMS Reference

Based on the picture below, that could be a genuine part.

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2

The current rating for the +5SB is just .1A, some the effect on efficiency is minimal. A 50/60 Hz transformer, recifiers, and 7805 3T regulator might have been cheaper than a flyback switching...

Re: Cap Identification

Those Wima 2.5 mm lead space caps definitely have a 1980s vibe. I'll guess the coating may be Humiseal, a coating used to seal out moisture.

Re: Corsair CX400W 5vsb goes into safety loop

Actually, NCC KY series are low impedance, high ripple current parts, probably a good choice. As for the Rubycon MCZ, that might be "too good", and it might not be great in a P/S. If I recall...

Re: help to find Nippon Chemi-Con datasheet

Datasheets for general purpose part often or usually do not give the ripple current or impedance rating. General purpose parts are not intended for high ripple current or low impedance usage.

Re: Help to choose caps with different ripple current

The NCC KMG series looks to be a high quality 105C general purpose part (and no longer in VCC's catalog?). The Rubycon ZLH series is a very low impedance, long life part. Very different parts for...

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2

Power Good (the grey wire) is a signal, not an output voltage. If all the output voltages from the power supply are in regulation, the Power Good should be logic high, 5V. If all output voltages are...

Re: GPU Caps Out of Spec?

Polymer caps don't have a liquid electrolyte that can evaporate over time. BTW, the dielectric in an electrolytic or polymer cap is not the electrolyte or the polymer. The dielectric is a layer of...

Re: Bestec ATX-250 12Z problems and solutions

1. You probably could, hypothetically, change the feedback divider resistors, making at least one a potentiometer, to get an adjustment range of 2V-6V. However ...

2. The supervisor circuit, if...

Re: Is it ok to use a capacitor with a much higher ripple?

Replacing a GP cap with a low impedance, high ripple current rating cap is usually OK. Unless it was a GP cap in a circuit needing low impedance, etc., the original part would not have been a misuse.

Switch MOSFET or IC

Re: Repairing Bestec TFX0250D5W

You might want to look at the inrush limiter thermistor, the green disc next to the fuse. It looks like it is chipped, and it might be cracked.

BTW, that power supply is almost 11 years old, very...
