Re: 1973 Magnavox. One dead channel.

Onsemi (the new name of ON Semiconductor) still lists them as active parts.

Re: Win7 updates for upgrading to Win10

I remember an update removing KB3035583 after the "free upgrade to Windows 10" period ended.

I wonder how long it will be before there is a "Get Windows 11" update.

Re: Bad Caps in the Movies !!!!!!

Jackcon was sending people replacement caps many years ago. I don't think they were much better.

Re: Has anyone had issues with Rayovac Alkaline batteries leaking

The batteries I pull out of my smoke detectors measure around 8.9V with no load. Under load, they seem to vary a lot. I think they're extremely lightly loaded in the smoke detector.

Most of...

Re: Post your worthless and/or pointless repairs

That was me.

The original drivers in these speakers were about that size (92mm outer frame diameter). I was thinking about something that would beat those really expensive Bose computer...

Re: Topcat's Other Misc Weird Build Thread

Only having one WiFi antenna and leaving the second antenna connector open is another quality bit of HP "engineering." In this case, there appears to be a second antenna on the front of the case, but...

Re: Post your worthless and/or pointless repairs

It's single-ended.

Other configurations might still have a DC blocking cap on the input.

To make this even more pointless, I have some sound damping foam that I could stick on the inside....

Re: Post your worthless and/or pointless repairs

I kind of did, but they can be reused for other projects. I'm curious to see if I can make small speakers that don't completely suck. Some companies have tried, but they just boost the "midbass"...

Re: Post your worthless and/or pointless repairs

I tried to fit a different speaker in those computer speakers that smoked a long time ago. The sound quality isn't worth the parts cost (Peerless TC6FC02-04 drivers, on sale at Parts Express for...

Re: Has anyone had issues with Rayovac Alkaline batteries leaking

I still have some old Walgreens "heavy duty" batteries that are close to 10 years old.

Those are the ones I mentioned that came in a cardboard box that hid the leaks. I don't remember all of the...

Re: Has anyone had issues with Rayovac Alkaline batteries leaking

I've seen them leak while they were still on store shelves.

During one of their many marketing troll renaming stunts (selling a "longer lasting" model that was identical to the standard model),...

Re: Cheap Ebay Stuff: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Post Your Reviews

I just tried a second Bluetooth board. It isn't as loud as the first one (even though the resistors on the output are the same values), and the resistor in series with the status LED is open. I'll...

I put it in a laptop, so there's no way to add a SATA card.

Re: Cheap Ebay Stuff: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Post Your Reviews

I feel like 100mH is a misprint, considering the size of an inductor in that value that can be used on a power supply. 100uH is more realistic.

I got three boards, so I'll try one powered from a...

Re: Cheap Ebay Stuff: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Post Your Reviews

I've had a few more cheap products that I can quickly review. I haven't actually used eBay in years, but these are available there.

The first is an IDE to SATA converter that takes M.2 SSDs....

Re: never trust samsung

Connecting to a random WiFi hotspot without telling the user is also an option. Microsoft already did that in Windows 10 and then quietly removed the "feature." Strangely, not many people had a...

Re: never trust samsung

I haven't seen a laptop with an optional webcam and microphone.

I still don't understand why so many people are paranoid about the camera and only a few people see the microphone as a security...

Re: never trust samsung

Considering the past track record of "smart" stuff, I wouldn't be surprised if someone found a way to disable random TVs (like the Western Digital NAS remote wipe exploit).

Re: Ubiquiti Unifi PoE Switch US-8-150W Power Supply Failure

Is this a 150W power supply? That Cosel is only 50W.

Adding low-speed fans is still better than nothing, so being completely fanless is kind of silly.

Re: Drilling holes laptop bottom

I briefly thought about that on my old Toshiba Satellite L750. It also has no direct air intake for the fan, but it would throttle when fully assembled. It would "only" reach 80C when disassembled...

Re: PCs aren't extinct! (version 2.0)

RAM prices were high, too. I remember the advice then being to buy the smallest amount of RAM you thought you might be able to get away with. I didn't listen, and I don't regret it after I started...

Re: 3300uf 6.3V Poly recpaing

If those are your only choices, the CapXon LZ is equivalent to the original caps, but considering CapXon's past reliability, I wouldn't expect them to last longer than a few years.

Re: Preventing Windows 10 from installing stuff without my permission

It's the stuff like Candy Crush that appears in a standard Windows installation.

Dolby Access is also "included" with Windows 10 (although it's one of the programs that gets downloaded instead of...
