the 3845 can have a startup cap as high as 47uf and still start up without noticeable delay - 10uf is going to dry out faster.

the comparaters are active-low
if either trips then the mcu thinks there is a fault with either the 8.3v or the battery voltage.
if both voltages are u.k. then the output should be high because of...

sounds bad, but test again off the board.
also, replace the 10uf cap with 22uf 50v

strange, the "video" drives used to be "white" series.
video drives have different formware btw, for pc use they will seem a little slow on seek.
the firmware tries to write consecutive sectors...

midlands - check RS, they have a number of counters.

no, not interested.
the heat issue is first - it sounds like the driver transisters are being over-driven.
they are often driven through small blocking capacitors

the thread you posted used the wrong caps - you need long life high temperature ones - not 2000hour 85' crap.

if your buying from RS then you may be able to get 125' caps -...

not just the sensor - clean the flywheel or whatever it is sensing.
i know on some old cars if you got lots of mud on the toothed wheel it couldnt sense it

q21 may be partially shorted,
the base shouldnt draw enough current to heat a resistor
