I've used one to start a completely flat 3.0L v6 Tiguan.
It has 6 or 8 cells inside and a boat load of diodes.

We have no idea what happened in the first place, what happened during the botching nor the state of the ROM, so can't make any guesses as to what's up.

It's about $1000 to recover a drive, if...

It depends how valuable the data is, professional data recovery is not cheap.

Not sure if you're joking but this will fuck the iron. I very much doubt any of it is made with tungsten which along with tantalum are the only two metals that are resistant to the highly corrosive...

I used to replace individual LEDs but when a whole set is delivered for less than 15, there is no point.

When LEDs start dying it's time to replace all of the strips with new.
A whole set from Ali is even cheaper than from ebay and will arrive in about 10 days.

The green stuff is UV solder mask.

I don't see why it shouldn't work, I've been using copper foil for these type of repairs , this is just precut.

Yes, with large copper planes on the front and the back solid aluminium the whole PCB becomes a heatsink.
