My guess is that your battery is really old an despite it saying you have 50% battery life, there's not enough amps to drive the screen/hw/OS so it constantly crashes.

When you have an offset like that with the probes shorted, I would try the simple things first.

1. Try a fresh batteries first. Some meters give incorrect readings before they show a low battery...

If you only need 4 ethernet/fast ethernet ports, old wifi routers are usually given away for free. Just turn off the wifi and use the 4 port ethernet switch built in. Lot's of old 802.11b only...

It's possible that a power outage, change in the end devices (reboot, software upgrade), etc changed something so that duplex negotiation is not working properly. This was a common problem early on...
