Re: Bypassing Passive PFC In ATX Power Supplies

I've found several revision based onto the same design and looked at the differences.

This one is without PFC:

The differences:...

Re: Separated Area For +5VSB Additional Filtering

I was not able to measure it.

It would have been indeed very useful to know as I was very tempted to use 2200uF/6,3V components to avoid doing these bridges.

Any suggestion is welcomed.

Re: Separated Area For +5VSB Additional Filtering

If they only cared to avoid cramming so many components in a very restricted space then a couple of 2200uF/10V capacitors in place of the original ones would have been enough to make the situation...

Re: Bypassing Passive PFC In ATX Power Supplies

More informations.

This is a F.S.P. with almost the same design:

No mylar but the 22uF capacitor is there.

Re: Seasonic X 850W not turning on

Was it a dead short or very low resistance? A bit afraid using polymers because of their failure mode (a power supply shuts itself but into an amplifier there is a cascading failure).

Re: Separated Area For +5VSB Additional Filtering

+5VSB extended: added inductor, then a 2200uF capacitor, then the purple wire. Negative was bridged using a 20AWG wire, as short as possible, from +5VSB ground to the new ground (on the lower side of...

Re: Bypassing Passive PFC In ATX Power Supplies

Passive PFC removed. Just noticed there is a 1uF/250V Mylar between "A" and "B" pins where the PFC was desoldered. And a 22uF/50V capacitor with its negative leg connected to "A". Shall I remove just...

Re: Separated Area For +5VSB Additional Filtering

With some re-routing I may use a spare inductor as a bridge (+5VSB Positive Rail > Inductor bridging original positive rail to unused area > 3300uF capacitor > +5VSB purple wire connected).

Re: Separated Area For +5VSB Additional Filtering

I have to re-read the exact model though schematics were not available when I searched for them. It looks like the +5VSB design is not the arcaic one.

Voltage is okay and does not go low when...

Re: Separated Area For +5VSB Additional Filtering

Any suggestion about what to do is welcomed.

Some informations:
1) The reusable area is totally disconnected from the rest of the board;
2) I was thinking about placing a huge negative wire from...

Separated Area For +5VSB Additional Filtering

I'm trying to tame the +5VSB ripple onto a F.S.P. power supply.

Despite its capacitors being okay it is quite high: no problems with USB pens or light devices but random disconnections on...

Re: Nippon Chemi-Con 3300uF 10x25mm?

No official datasheets for this resized version. How to estimate their ripple rating?

I'd bet not less than 2200-2300mA but a better way to calculate or estimate it would be important for...

Re: Question about bipolar electrolytics

I think not. Bipolar electrolitics are also built as single capacitors with both the anode and cathode foils oxidized.

Back-To-Back vs. Single Cap. is more or less the same but purists swear that...

Re: Bypassing Passive PFC In ATX Power Supplies

It should also limit inrush current, isn't it?

By the way, this power supply has no NTC. Which should be a practice for increased efficiency but I do not like that.

I am planning to add a 2.5...

Re: Different primary capacitors in ATX Power Supply

Thank you.

It is to be avoided as well if the rated capacitance is the same but brands are different?

I've seen oftenly identical capacitors (same voltage, same capacitance, same producer, same...

Re: Capacitor replacement

The big one is an ancient Computer Grade Capacitor.

The difference is that the big one handles much more current and its E.S.R. is very low.

The replacement is general purpose, quite a cheap...

Re: Nippon Chemi-Con 3300uF 10x25mm?

Thank you.

Panasonic FRs seems to be the choice though they are lower E.S.R. than the KYs. The KYs howewer handle less ripple (~200mA) compared to the FRs. But they have a more close E.S.R. if we...

Different primary capacitors in ATX Power Supply

I am reparing a quite cheap ATX Power Supply which will be used just for testing motherboards.

I am planning to use different capacitors for the primary (470uF@200V + 560uF@200V).

The...

Re: Nippon Chemi-Con 3300uF 10x25mm?

Yes, the common one is the 2200uF@10V (in the damned, recap unfriendly, D10 diameter).

Re: Nippon Chemi-Con 3300uF 10x25mm?

Thank you.

Also post their E.S.R. to check if they may be suitable in switching power supplies.

As a rough reference please note that Teapo SC capacitors (*2200uF@10V) used in nowadays ATX...

Re: Nippon Chemi-Con 3300uF 10x25mm?

As anyone checked if these KZEs are genuine? They could be a stock from a custom size made for some manufacturer but it ain't confirmed.

Re: APC UPS cap, suitable replacement?

You can go higher (e.g. 47uF@400V) as least as the diode bridge is decently sized.

A Chemi-Con KXL is suitable for that purpose and its diameter will fit as it is a miniaturized series. It should...
