Re: Compaq PDP-121P - Baked MOV

Excellent work there!

Now the question is, what if you distribute this 8 to 11.5 Watt load between the 5V and 12V rails evenly? Will it still shut down?

My proposal is to put maybe 5 Watts on...

Re: Whirlpool washing machine L2158 control board

It's not a good idea to socket PWM-FET ICs, because they use the Source/return and Drain leads for keeping the IC cool. In a socket, this won't work and the IC will overheat.

Re: LCD tv power supply transformer magnets broke off

Keep us posted what happens.
The glued core should work, so long as you didn't increase the gaps too much.
If it works, also put some silicone glue to hold the core together. Superglue does not...

Re: Mad Dog Multimedia (Super Flower) MD-500SCPS

Wow, really cool save, Pentium4!
I'm glad you were able to get ahold of such PSU, as I know you'd restore it perfectly.

The box is such a trip from the past with those old companies and pictures....

Re: Thermaltake Smart 500W... will the Crapacitors last?

I agree with you on all of this 100%.
Thermaltake does honor their warranty, so they probably indeed designed it (or rather had someone make this PSU for them) to last as long as the warranty...

Re: Dell 330W AC/DC Adapter XM3C3

Concur. That would be a good start. Also remove diode D136 - its case looks cracked and blown. Remove the "ZP" diode too, if it shows shorted. Check if the resistor next to it has gone open-circuit.

Re: Dell DPS 1200MB A pinout

Check the voltage on the pins on the left side relative to ground.
One of them should have about 12V with the PSU plugged in. This is likely the 12V Standby (+12Vsb) rail.
And if this PSU uses...

Re: Learning to repair monitor's PSU

Correct.

Most monitor power supplies indeed usually have a 5V power supply and then also a 12-16V supply (varies with monitors.) Some will also have a 24V supply, in addition to 5V and 12V.

Re: My grandma's Vintage Speakers Winson SB 300 A (1979)

Most cheap speakers almost always include a frequency response and/or distortion diagram. So if you see one on a set of speakers, they are likely cheap speakers (or at best, the low end of mid-fi. :D...

Re: Monitor Audio RSW-12 Plate Amp Popping/Crackling

Capacitor C14 on the power shift board, right next to that hot transistor Q10, seems to still be original. It may not be the problem, but I strongly suggest changing it. After so many years, it more...

Re: REL Acoustics Q150E,SOT DHS20 identification help please

Good point, I forgot to think about that one.
I know vibrations generally tend to be a bigger issue for solder joints on the larger components on the PCB.

80 VA might be a little weak - that's...

Re: Manufacturing Date of Electrolytic capcitor

Yeah, Digikey are indeed quite expensive.
But they do stock a lot of different parts and you get a guarantee that the parts will be legit and not counterfeit. So it does still make sense to buy some...

Re: Identify PS4 HDMI SMD

It looks like a ceramic capacitors. According to image in first post, it connects to the pink trace, which appears to be some kind of a power rail (5V?) My guess would be, that ceramic cap is there...

Re: Amstrad DVD Player cheap recap

Maybe, maybe not.
PSU appears to use discontinuous (flyback) topology and is always On, so long as it's plugged in. Thus, it will just depend on how much ripple current that flyback SMPS puts out...

Re: Roister Pb-150 Subwoofer repaired, how to prevent from failing again?

Well, if these two transistors burned... and assuming that's what went wrong the first time around... then they must clearly be undersized for the task. The question is, where are they lacking? It...

No.

Re: Technics SU-Z45 vintage amplifier repair

Looks like Panasonic built this amp for Technics, judging by the many AN-- ICs and (old) Panasonic logo on the big transformer.

I guess be careful if you try to crank this thing up. From what I've...

Re: Yamaha YST-SW030 full recap

Most likely these regulate the +/-12V (or +/-15V... or whatever typical supplies most op-amps use) for the pre-amp section.
I almost always see these running hot in newer audio stuff, simply because...

Re: Pioneer-A66X recap and restore

From what I've seen online from pro headphone reviews (like rtings.com), over-emphasized "S-es" means the device is said to produce "sibilant" sound, which generally means frequencies around the 10...

Re: Got 4 LG L222WS 22" for free - psu recap

I strongly prefer 16:10 monitors over 16:9... and 1650x1050 is a really good fit for a 22" screen - at least to my eyes (I don't like really high resolutions that make text...
