Re: Is my Laptops Hard Drive on it's Way Out? (4 Year Old Samsung ST1000LM024)

I back 'em up regardless of failure status. Usually once a week with full encrypted disk images, which protects against total disk failure, catastrophic FS or LUKS container damage, or total loss of...

Re: Is my Laptops Hard Drive on it's Way Out? (4 Year Old Samsung ST1000LM024)

Don't use it with anything important for the rest of it's life. My personal policy with failing HDDs is that once they start accumulating read and write errors, it's queued for immediate replacement,...

Re: Is my Laptops Hard Drive on it's Way Out? (4 Year Old Samsung ST1000LM024)

That is 115% a Seagate drive. It's not even a half-decent drive. It's an infamously bad Momentus series drive. Had one of those catastrophically fail before the 2 year mark.

Know why it's called...

Re: Is my Laptops Hard Drive on it's Way Out? (4 Year Old Samsung ST1000LM024)

Running slow? Yep, it's on it's way out. It's likely accumulating bad sectors and massive amounts of read errors. It's already got a high number of write errors. Retire the drive from service...

296 failed calibration attempts? That's a sure sign that it's not long from failing. Backup, wipe it, and use it as target practice. Or run it into the ground.

Re: A Colossal HDD Failure

Nice. Would there be a way to directly wire the motor driver to the spindle motor and power it directly, instead of having other control logic get in the way?

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

Seagate? Nuh-uh, automatic recommendation for replacement on the spot if it's not showing SMART problems. If it is, it's diagnosed as a failing HDD on the quote.

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2

I give it roughly 6 months before the main filter expires. I'm also going to guess that when it does, it's going to fail shorted before you can unplug it and trip a breaker or blow a fuse, and it...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

It's a process that involves removing the weak plastic rivets from a Model M that are used to hold the barrel plate to the backplate and sandwich everything in between them together. Over time, these...

Re: Fwiw: Apc ups

The real fix is to replace the faulty battery(ies) and run a runtime calibration.

Astec AA15990 Schematics

Does anyone have schematics to this PSU? I've got one with an apparently shorted 12V rail. Pulled and checked the rectifier, it's good. Now I'm not sure where to start looking for shorts.

Re: Intel has a new logo

My i7-4790K easily pushes my exhaust temp to 95F under full load. And that's with a Noctua NH-D14 CPU HSF. Averages 145-160F CPU temp under full load.

Re: Intel introduces ATX12VO spec eliminating 3.3 and 5v

So is this going to apply to AMD boards as well? If not, will we now have 2 different standards running in parallel, ATX and ATX12VO?

And do you think AMD is going to adopt this in the long run?...
