Re: The ghetto mod thread

LOL, Great idea, I have a laptop with a missing foot as well that has been bugging me, hoping that I could find the foot one day. Now this tells me I need to go through my jar with all the bad caps...

Re: The ghetto mod thread

You know, other than the fact it probably doesn't cool as well, and the fact it's wasting 3 PCI slots... might need a double take.

Re: Stereo speakers to mono speaker

Question too is do you need the amplifier still?

If you still need the amplifier, then I think it's worth while debugging and fixing, unless if the problem was due to a speaker going open.

Re: Crimping crimp-on RG58, RG174, etc. connectors without die?

LOL

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4278483

I really wonder how long these will last... PLA is very hard and brittle, but even aluminum is harder than PLA, and real dies are steel of...

Re: (Short rant) Screws !

Wondering if I should part this thing, or mod it to be more useful. I don't have any 7.2V NiCd cells so I don't have much use for the charger. Could use the parts, though not sure if the mechanical...

Re: Harbor Freight car battery chargers any good?

All lead acid batteries need equalization but you can't on AGM. What do you do when that AGM needs equalization?

Throw it away. :-(

(BTW equalization == "balancing")

Cheapest waterproof RF coaxial connector?

What would be the cheapest weatherproof RF coaxial connector one could get?

Searching for "cheapest waterproof RF coaxial connector" gives me F-connectors. F-that. Not 50 ohm. Next seems to be...

Re: (Short rant) Screws !

Hmm...true, perhaps I should just drill out the whole head.

Yeah those tamper proof one way "pre-stripped" flat head screws are the worst (You got the name right I think, "one-way"). They were...

Re: (Short rant) Screws !

The device isn't even worth the cost of a new security torx bit set :(
BTW the two holes bit is called "Spanner" not snake eyes...though this sort of conflicts with wrenches...

Re: Harbor Freight car battery chargers any good?

absorption phase = on a multiphase charger, the battery has reached terminal charging voltage, but still taking in charge slowly. Usually higher than 80% charged.
CA = Cranking amps. A fairly...

Re: Harbor Freight car battery chargers any good?

depends on the battery of course.

Though at 2A it could take a day to charge some of the bigger batteries. However at 13.8V it should be about full, though it may still be in absorption phase.

Re: Harbor Freight car battery chargers any good?

Are people using AGM car batteries or flooded? Seems these chargers need to know what type else they will over/undercharge them?

hmm... the battery that got destroyed, I added about 600mL (!!!)...

Re: (Short rant) Screws !

Sorry for necro.

Plain security torx? Yes.

Why this sucks? because I already have one of those " hex drive interchangeable tip security torx driver from T10 to T40 but the " hex shank does...

Re: Harbor Freight car battery chargers any good?

The HFT float charger killed one of my batteries, so one strike against hft chargers. Not the same item however. Really need to get a better charger or mod an existing one... Couldn't crack open...

Re: ESR meter upgrades

One would hope that they are, though for like microprocessors there's a reason most computers have a huge variance between them despite being the "same" frequency...

Re: Harbor Freight car battery chargers any good?

I still have/use one of those ancient large transformer chargers...sigh. Wonder if it's worth to mod it to regulate it or stop it from charging once it reaches full voltage...

I still wonder what...

Re: car jump pack build lipo

would be interesting to know if it was 6 or 8...?
I suppose depending on the cells, 4P should supply enough current to direct start a car, just not through the cigarette lighter.

Re: car jump pack build lipo

Was wondering about those jump packs. While I can't say it's impossible to direct start a car starter with a pack "big enough"...I'd say one would need some 100 odd 18650s to do it safely, and end...

Re: ESR meter upgrades

How does one calibrate the crystal or is it dependent on the crystal being accurate? Can crystal errors be calibrated to some NIST traceable source?

Re: ESR meter upgrades

And how accurate is the crystal or is it using the on-chip oscillator, that thing really should be calibrated too...not sure if atmel^H^H^H^H^H^H microchip tunes those to 1ppm?

Re: ESR meter upgrades

Ah so the actual value doesn't matter and you don't need to "enter" the value in...? interesting. I guess with accurate "T" and "R" you can still find accurate "C".

Will be interesting to compare...

Re: ESR meter upgrades

How much calibration do these need anyway, these devices vary so much that we need 0.1% capacitors to calibrate them? Uhoh.

2F capacitor? (I've hated "mF" for F even though they've done this...

Re: Finally built the Bob Parker "Blue" ESR Meter

Interesting the "old" table seems to include some compensation to limited testing frequency, but the "new" graphs do not...

Now to attach a table to the AVR transistortester ... heh...
