Re: Learning with ATX CHIEFTEC 450W PSU

If it hasn't been mentioned already, make sure you're using the correct common point!
If you're shunting that pin of the APFC IC, it will go to the - side of the line rectifier!
Not secondary DC...

Re: Learning with ATX CHIEFTEC 450W PSU

You're choking the APFC with the bulb in series with the AC line. For initial testing with the standby supply, you can use the dim-bulb, but the APFC will try to boost & charge the main B+ cap when...

Re: After a thunderstorm, the Palit GeForce GT-240 video card

Was this a PC connected to a TV/monitor with external cable/antenna connections?

If so, what likely happened is the cable/antenna shield picked up an induced voltage from a nearby hit.
This then...

Re: Busted tankless electric water heater control board

The heat from desoldering them can temporarily make the electrolytics test "better," leading to false positives.
If you're at that point, just change them.
Don't buy into the ESR testing- given...

Re: Busted tankless electric water heater control board

Replace the electrolytics with the same voltage/value, but Nichicon PW/HE, or Panasonic FC/FR. I see at least 3 on that board.
Some look like 'noname' junk.
No wonder these "regularly" fail, with...

Re: Can a new computer smell like urine?

Actually, I use MAF sensor cleaner on PCBs, if/when I don't want to "waste" my CRC QD.

Are we certain this is a *new* motherboard?
:D

Not that I do it much anymore since the bottom's fallen...

Re: Bose Sound Link Mini II red power light is flashing

Pull the battery and check for shorts across the battery input on the PCB. The MLCCs can short. Remove each one and test if a short is found. Usually the boost converter is OK.

Seen this in JBL...

Re: new apple studio display uses capxon caps

Yup, price =/= quality.

Just like "high end" audiophoolery, with sloppy wiring & cheep components, crApple is all about perception.

Re: KingWin ABT-650MM 650 Watt ATX PSU [PCB: SW8835REV:A]

Nice job, as usual.
:rejoice:

If you're up for it, maybe reduce the timing cap for the '7500. Increase the freq & run the output inductor cooler; stay below ~50 kHz with that -26 core.

Yea,...

Re: Delta DPS400-MB, pwr_ok stays low

Excellent, another one saved/fixed!

IIRC, there were some AT-era Compaqs that had the PG circuitry on the MB.
I found this out when building a "retro PC" with a PS from one of these,...

Re: Delta DPS400-MB, pwr_ok stays low

There should be a "pullup" resistor from +5 to PGO, as the latter is typically an "open collector" output.
If this is open, PG will never go high, no matter what's going on with the...

Re: Laptop power brick audibly noisy

It's one of the cheaper "laptop replacement" power supplies.

Re: Roister Pb-150 Subwoofer repaired, how to prevent from failing again?

They seem to be better than average. That driver isn't shielded, there's no "can" around the magnet.

Probably just the probe scratching thru the anodizing.

You're welcome...

Re: Philips F9217L-50R speakers build quality impressions and DIY surround repair

@momaka:

It's interesting how certain "unassuming" cabinet/driver combos can be improved. Even a (not so?) random port addition did wonders.

A QnD test for the port is to play some "party music...

Re: 9v super basic wall wart issue

Soldering heat from R&R'ing C3 may have temporarily "woken" it up.
The 431 seems to need a minimum load; when an unbypassed opto LED is the sole source of current to the 431, the latter can hunt....

Re: 9v super basic wall wart issue

The 431 may be hunting.

Try a 150-1k resistor across the IR LED in the opto.
Points are marked in attached image.

Change the small cap on pri side to 22u/50v or 47u/50v.

Re: Roister Pb-150 Subwoofer repaired, how to prevent from failing again?

OK, my turn.

Upgrade the drivers, Q47/48. Final gain drops at high output current; driver not only needs to be robust, but also keep its gain up so the previous stages stay linear.
The...

Re: PSU weaken - occasional reset

Just so you're not chasing a false lead- remember that after desoldering, if those caps are warm when you ESR test them, you can get a false OK reading.
Let them cool 30 min or so before testing...

Re: PSU weaken - occasional reset

Most likely, yes. Raidmax is known to use bad caps.

If PG is dropping out only with the tester connected, either the main output filters are nearly open, or bad small caps in the control ckts are...

Datasheet Error: ST STP24NF10

So I'm building a 12V-19V boost converter for automotive laptop use, and noticed the heatsink getting hotter than expected.

I've used JB Quick for this, including copper heatsinks to MOSFET cases.

If/when you need to save them, a quick blast from the torch expands the heatsink and breaks the bond.

Do this in a...

Re: Question about GFI in a specific situation...

GFCIs will not prevent shocks from the secondary of a transformer.
Nor will they protect against hand-to-hand shocks (w/o ground faults) on the 120 side..
