Re: Compaq PDP-121P - Baked MOV

Yes, looks pretty normal. If the TT tester was able to identify it, then that means the MOSFET is actually working.

Looks like the MOSFET between the 12.8V and 12V rail is used either as a...

Re: Why does my Seasonic SSR-500GB3 whine??

Good call!

So, if the PSU is making whining noise both in standby/soft-off mode and aksi when turned On, then that means the whining noise is likely coming from the 5VSB circuit (probably the 5VSB...

Re: MS-6590 KT4 Ultra - short on vcore

Can you post what CPU's you have and also what the 2nd motherboard is?
A lot of early and mid-era socket 462 motherboards only had support for 133 MHz FSB CPUs - that is, Thoroughbred, at best....

Re: K7S5A recap

Hey, that's really good to know! Thanks for updating your progress. :)
Mine is still sitting on the shelf here just the way I left it last time I posted about it here - shame, I know. :\ This really...

Re: best cheap/free scores 1.1

That's a really nice story. Glad you saved it. It's actually not that worthless of a machine anymore. The Windows 98 / XP "retro" boom is continuing to pickup popularity... and as such, good AGP...

Re: WARNING: Live heatsinks & single pole on/off switches in switching power supplies

I've been repairing PSUs for years now and also been posting some of those repairs here for just as long... yet, it never occurred to me that we should have a warning like this as a sticky thread....

Re: The ghetto mod thread

That sounds about where I would be drawing the line too.
Q6600, OC-ed or not, can peak up to 130-140 Watts probably. HD4850 and mid-range HD5k (i.e. HD5770) are also another 100-110 Watts. So that's...

Re: Dell Dimension 1100? ...or is it? The Ultimate Sleeper System

Nice!
Don't you just love it when you have old hardware like that and eventually find the best / top-end parts for it? :) Years ago when this hardware was new, one would have probably had to spend...

Re: Chieftec GPS-550AB-A (Delta OEM)

Well, I see an 8-pin IC on the primary in that first picture. So I don't think that PSU uses a 2-transistor 5VSB (but check what is written on that IC first!) The small cap next to it (47 uF) is...

Re: ASUS P5GC-MX motherboard recap

Just a short update about some of the caps... I'm glad I did the original preemptive recap on the CPU VRM. Indeed the information I've read in other posts about United Chemicon TMV capacitors failing...

Re: The Hall of Shame - Badcaps Photo Montage

Wow, a failed *primary* cap. FHY must be absolutely terrible then, because even other crap cap brands usually rarely have issues with the high-voltage (200V) caps failing on the input of a PSU....

Re: Casing Power MPT-301 [PCB ATX9806b-p REV: A3] - load testing

Thank you for posting this!
Yeah, your 2x 3300 uF Rubycon MBZ caps will certainly keep the 5VSB circuit nice and quiet on ripple... though even the stock 2x 2200 uF are probably already...

Re: Why does my Seasonic SSR-500GB3 whine??

Does the whine noise change under different loads? (Try something like AIDA-64 or OCCT to load the CPU only, GPU only, and then CPU + GPU to get maximum load.)
If noise changes with load, it's...

Re: Chieftec GPS-550AB-A (Delta OEM)

For the endurance alone: yes.

VY series are only rated for 1000 hours (at 105C, max applied voltage, and any diameter, it looks like.) The ripple current is also only 1170 mA for the 16V, 3300 uF...

Re: Chieftec GPS-550AB-A (Delta OEM)

Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying that. I have plenty of old and well-built half-bridge PSUs from well-known good manufacturers (Mitac, MeanWell, HiPro, and etc.) that didn't have PI coils on some...

Re: Tesla m40 burned my motherboard VRM

I agree 100% with the video, but this is NOT why your motherboard's CPU VRM burned. The two are not connected in any way and it's just NOT possible.
I've connected many video cards with burned...

Re: Chieftec GPS-550AB-A (Delta OEM)

LOL.
Ripple must have been through the roof even with the original caps new back then, just as I suspected. Reminds me of the problems I had with a cheap Deer/L&C PSU many years ago making a PC of...

Re: Tesla m40 burned my motherboard VRM

Probably not the PSU then.

I suspect this was just a "freak" accident - likely something to do with things moving around a bit when the card was installed. For example, I see you have some custom...

Re: Compaq PDP-121P - Baked MOV

Probably not.
The DC voltages on your input caps looked good and didn't seem to drop out / dip when turning On the PSU... so I suspect this isn't the issue.
Nonetheless, it does need to be...

WOW!
That PCB sure has seen better days. Not talking about the wires on the bottom here - while they aren't a great job from the original owner, they aren't terrible either. What really intrigues me...
