Quote: "An inductor typically consists of an insulated WIRE wound into a coil around a core."

You'd (have to) be worried if your meter was saying "OL"...

Re: Repairing Alesis M1 Active mk2 Monitor Speakers

Well, that's the point - finding the problem and taking care of it.

All that buying a whole new power supply (if you could even do that) would solve, is postponing the problem.

Re: Repairing Alesis M1 Active mk2 Monitor Speakers

Got a multimeter (and the knowledge / skill to use it)?

Re: Mackie CR4 monitors

Here's a silly thought - any chance there's room on the backplate to mount the transformer on the outside, using the same mounting holes? Going by the photo, there should be.

That way, you'd just...

Re: Mackie CR4 monitors

That's pretty consistent with the photos from the link you listed a couple posts above.

That zener diode and its pair (Z4), along with those two fatter resistors, burn off perhaps a bit too much...

Re: Krk rp8 g2 capacitor replacement and other

Well, this might sound weird, but... y'know, measuring things might be a step forward :D

Going with the "shotgun approach" is rarely the best idea (imho)...

Re: Krk rp8 g2 capacitor replacement and other

How important is to you, that all is well when all pots are at 0?

If one needs one click over to match the other side, fine, make the adjustment and be done with it :P

Pots aren't the most...

Re: KRK G4 version inside look

I wouldn't trust a single word from the marketing department of any (large / famous) company.

I hadn't looked into them before, but "uuuh", wanky new LCD on these G4's? Lemme guess - the "premium...

Re: KRK G4 version inside look

I'd be shocked if that were anywhere near true.

At best, maaaaaaaaaaaaybe they might've splurged on a pair of Japanese electrolytics for the main power filtering?
Surely they couldn't have...

Re: Repairing Alesis M1 Active mk2 Monitor Speakers

Oldschool is plenty - since the problem is pretty low-frequency, just about any scope will do.

My thought was to try to work back from the woofer output back through the power amp input and then...

Re: Repairing Alesis M1 Active mk2 Monitor Speakers

Well then, the problem's not with the capacitors. Resistors are somewhat unlikely to cause that sort of behaviour, so i'd say it's some silicon that's likely the culprit.

I don't suppose you have...

Re: Powersoft D4002 no power

I'll have to keep that in mind, then :D But yeah, glad to hear that's all sorted out.

I've got a bit of a monster on my "operating table" myself (Ram Audio S6000 / LD Systems SP6k). One of the...

Re: Powersoft D4002 no power

At least for testing, i'm sure it'll do the job. It's there just to act as a "soft fuse", as it were, to limit the current drawn by the control board circuitry.

If they're rated the same (and...

Re: Powersoft D4002 no power

I'd expect pin 2 of J5 to connect to either VRECT or VBOOST. That's the only way the U1 / UC3842-operated flyback can work.

Although, in many other such supplies, its Vcc capacitor is far larger...

Re: Broken transformer on Carlsbro GRX7

What're the odds you got the windings back to front?

Maybe it has one primary and two secondaries (which would make a lot more sense)?

What DCR are you measuring across the single "secondary"?

Re: Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL firmware dump

Well, i ended up finding a working unit for a reasonable price locally (180eu) and, sure enough, "cloning" the firmware to my first unit brought it back to life instantly!

Or, well, as soon...

Re: Powersoft D4002 no power

Fair point. Might also be worth double-checking the associated MOSFET (Q6 on the main board). If that happened to kick the bucket, it's not unheard of for it to have taken out the UC3842 as well.

Re: Powersoft D4002 no power

The source of the voltage for that small flyback kinda baffled me (too), but it can't be coming from "D" (the switching MOSFET's drain pin), because that would defeat the whole flyback converter.

Re: Powersoft D4002 no power

It took a while, but i think i figured it out - VAUX is most likely created by U1 (on ALSU__13EN), driving Q6 on the main PSU board (on ALIN__14EN). L1/2 and L3/4 form the primary and the secondary...

Re: What's this pcb for the speaker tabs made out of?

Wait a minute - why exactly would the speaker (on its own, outside of an enclosure) need to be connected and disconnected so often?

Regardless, one simple(?) solution could be a strip of...

Re: Krk rp8 g2 capacitor replacement and other

In that particular case, the voltage across those caps is "only" the voltage of the Zener diode next to them, so 15v. A 25v cap will work just as well as a 50v there; they just got a better price on...

Re: Krk rp8 g2 capacitor replacement and other

I'd just get 10-20 of each of the small ones (10-100uF) "to be safe", but then again, i'm the kinda guy that buys parts "for future projects too".

And those 100u/220u ones don't need to be...
