Re: Altec PC410 (BGA Rework) to communicate with PC

Does your ch340 get recognized by the OS? Going from memory here, IIRC, you have to download a driver for the ch340, there aren't "certified" drivers for them. Has been so long since I have been...

Re: Altec PC410 (BGA Rework) to communicate with PC

I think I can help elucidate the issue. The issue is you have fake proliant and FTDI chips. Prolific and FTDI decided because there are so many fakes out there, that they would bar the fake chips...

Re: Old Kenmore Clothes Dryer

You can say that again! Thanks everyone, I'll check the resistor, it's quite possible it's fried or out of spec.

And yeah, it's probably from the 70-80s, possibly the late 60s. But it just...

Old Kenmore Clothes Dryer

So, this is a very, very old dryer, and I love it. I can take it apart almost with my eyes closed, it's usually very easy to repair. Anyway, the timer module refuses to advance. I replaced the...

Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display

Ok, I was able to get the software compiled and on a Pi Pico (rp2040). There were some register bit banging, I didn't translate that yet, but I don't see why that wouldn't work.

Again, I'm...

Re: Short finder

I have seen a lot of uptake of the rp2040 among hobbyists recently. I have been on the fence about it for a while, but there seems to be a lot of momentum. The lib support seems to be there, and...

Re: Short finder

Maybe, maybe not. More samples per second seemed to be desirable to krypton and others. With a nano costing 3 usd and an rp2040 board costing 4 usd I don't know why anyone would use an arduino...

Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display

I went through the Badcaps and EEVBlog thread and pulled out the relevant posts before our most recent discussion. Here it is for reference:

Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display

Nice. I reread this thread yesterday, I'll go through and reread the eevblog post today. Did you find that in the original krypton post or was it another post?

Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display

The latest I have heard is that he was going to put the pcb design files up for sale so people could order their own, but he has been too busy.

Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display

That sounds like why he added the constant current source for the probes to limit current through the item being tested. IIRC, he said it was limited to 30ma. Probably a really good idea.

Re: Short finder

Two things, the PCB layout is missing and kripton believes there's something wrong with the schematic.

So I think in the other thread people were discussing how to fix it. Also discussion of...

Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display

I read through the thread and found this post by krypton. Sounds like he added a voltage regulator and constant current source to the pnp transistor. I believe he later said he removed the...

Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display

I checked the datasheets, and didn't see anything that would indicate less performance or accuracy at 3v3 vs 5v. Maybe I'm missing it?

I'm asking because it would be really nice to sub out a pi...

Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display

And sub in some chinese regulator to make BOM for a 3 usd board, there's your voltage sag. Can't say I'm surprised. I almost never use the on board power to run peripherals.

We could easily...

Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display

From the other thread, here's megaraider's 2c.

"The current source problem arises from using the 5V output line from the Arduino Nano.
As he wrote somewhere he couldn't figure out why the voltage...

Re: Short finder

I have the parts you need to buy from ali, I don't have a few parts that need to come from mouser/digikey.

Re: New tool to find short capacitors on motherboards : shorty with display

That doesn't sound insurmountable. Couldn't we slap a linear regulator on there and get the current required?

Re: peavey xr1212

Peavey is a great company when it comes to providing schematics, etc. They will also sell parts if they have them, and they have had some parts to some very old amps I have repaired.

Re: 2DIN Android Radio YD7388 amp short in one output

My guess would have been the Y7388 AMP IC also. If you find something else that is damaging the Y7388 and you need to replace it again, there is a better chip that is pin compatible that you might...

Re: For laptop/PC repair what V and A rating should my probes be?

I bought these probes about 2 years ago, and I have been very happy with them. They are pretty commonly available on ali in different kits. I'm just a dabbler, but they have been good to me, and...

Re: Dell laptop LA90PE0-01 charger repair

I was wondering how long it took you to dig that all out. I took one apart for fun, saw the glue and said nope! If we were lucky, it might be thermoplastic, maybe warming could soften it, but...
