    MSI RX580 Gaming X Plus 8GB Repair Help

    trying to fix a MSI RX580 Gaming X Plus 8GB

    resistances all look normal there are no shorts on any of the rails the card powers on and all voltages are present except v core not sure where to go from here any help would be appreciated

    Its uses GS7256 for memory and memory controller
    https://cdn.badcaps-static.com/pdfs/...3cb0d60647.pdf

    These are the voltages i got from memory
    Pin 1 = 9.2
    Pin 2 = 9.25
    Pin 3 = 1.95
    Pin 4 = 8.84
    Pin 5 = 11.98
    Pin 6 = 0.60
    Pin 7 = 1.24
    Pin 8 = 1.06

    These are the voltages i got from memory controller
    Pin 1 = 10.32
    Pin 2 = 1.33
    Pin 3 = 0.34
    Pin 4 = 9.65
    Pin 5 = 11.92
    Pin 6 = 0.60
    Pin 7 = 1.17
    Pin 8 = 0.76

    Its Dropout Linear Regulator Is GS7166

    These are the voltages i got from it
    Pin 1 = 3.3
    Pin 2 = 3.3
    Pin 3 = 3.3
    Pin 4 = 5.0
    Pin 5 = 0.0
    Pin 6 = 1.8
    Pin 7 = 0.68
    Pin 8 = 0.0

    QM3816N6 Mosfets it uses

    8510

    Multi-Phase Controller It uses is ir35201
    https://cdn.badcaps-static.com/pdfs/...4dea35e76e.pdf

    These are the voltages i got from it, not sure if anything else is needed
    Enable Pin 21 = v3.3
    VRDY2 Pin 4 = v3.3
    VRDY1 Pin 11 = v3.3
    VCC Pin 38 = v3.3

    If there is no short on Vcore then you need to check the Power Good signal coming from the Vram VRM Controller. This should generate the Enable signal on the Vcore VRM Controller.

    The P_Good -> Enable signal may go through a few transistors on the way

    If the Vcore VRM Controller IC has:
    Vcc (power to the chip itself)
    PVcc - this should be the 12V rail and may go the the Controller IC, depends which type it is
    EN - enable

    And the high side MOSFET drains have 12V

    And you still have no Vcore...

    Try fitting a new controller IC

    If that does not work then check for other problems (missing/broken resistors or capacitors) around the controller IC

    I hope that helps

      Re: MSI RX580 Gaming X Plus 8GB Repair Help

      thx for the reply

      i fitted a new controller IC and still no vcore

      Enable = Pin 21 - v3.3 is present
      VRDY1 = Pin 11 - v3.3 is present
      VRDY2 = Pin 04 - v3.3 is present
      VCC = Pin 38 - v3.3 is present

      all the high side MOSFET drains have 12V and i couldn't find any obvious broken resistors or bad capacitors around the controller IC there are a few missing things around the controller but they look empty by default

        Have you checked vcc/hvcc/lvcc on the gate drivers?

          all i got was 12v on VCC and 12v on HVCC nothing on LVCC or any other pin

            checked again with some smaller probes vcc/hvcc/lvcc on the gate drivers are all there

              Dunno then I guess you need to study the IR35201 datasheet some more - seems like it is not outputting PWM to the drivers(can you ascertain this?) and you need to find out why.

                theres 8 pins that say pwm on IR35201 i checked there is 1.4v on all of them

                    Looks like you need to upload configuration data to the new IR35201 controller, who knew?

                      thanks for the info that's probably the issue never knew you had to program the new one

                      i put the original one back and did some more measurements since i learned more about how it works and found that its not outputting pwm, but the new one i put on was so looks like it was the vrm controller that was faulty hopefully it will work when the new chip is programed

                        it doesnt say what he used to connect the chip to the pc think this is probably it?

                          Yeah looks like it, bit expensive tho, especially if it still doesn't work

                              i got the programmer but unfortunately i cant connect to the vrm controller, its too badly damaged to save the config from. i have it set up correct because i can connect to the new chip so unless someone has a config for it, i suppose there is nothing i can do

                                There is another broken one on eBay tho

                                  If the interface is accessible when card assembled (some boards have pads or even connectors usually at some edge for production process programming), you may buy a new or used card, read out the vrm chip, and give the card back, provided you find a store where you can do this without reason. Maybe not very fair/elegant, but a solution.

                                    theres no connector on it and would have to take the whole thing apart and solder 3 wires to the board. bit frustrating since i think the board will work, just stopped by some software
