Upgrading to Windows 95 in its time was moderately steep (system requirements - I ran 95B on an old 386 in 1997 which did work), and XP was quite steep (compatibility - I held off until 2004, when I got my new computer at this time). I think Vista is a bit too steep for me.
Not to mention some devices not being able to work with Vista (which means some of them being thrown out because they would not work with Vista!)
I guess the manufacturers want to make money selling new devices and not supporting older ones

...
