    Re: Post your system.......

The first time I've bought a new (rather than referb/business off-lease) laptop in over a decade, but I figured I'd need to get something with Windows 11 eventually (eventually it will probably be my main laptop, but for now I'll be using it alongside my Dell Precision M4800 as I'm not ready to go "all-in" on Windows 11 yet) and MicroCenter had a heck of a deal on these ($599).

    HP Victus 15-fb0121nr:
    -CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600H
    -GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX1650
    -SSD: 512GB NVMe
-RAM: 16GB (upgraded from the 8GB it came with) DDR4 3200MHz
    -Display 15.6" 1920X1080 144hz refresh
-OS: Windows 11 Home (will likely be upgraded to Pro)

Build quality and serviceability (7 Philips screws to remove the bottom panel and then you have access to pretty much everything) are decent for a current production laptop. It is mostly plastic but has aluminum reinforcements and feel fairly solid (not quite mobile workstation solid, but better than many consumer laptops), and has a LiPo battery (like just about everything these days), but is fairly easy to replace if needed (remove the bottom cover, then it is 4 Philips screws and a connector, at least HP didn't glue it into the case or use "specialty" screws like some manufactures are doing).

8-10 hrs. with "general usage" (web browsing, MS office, etc., it has switchable graphics so under "light" usage it will use the integrated RX Vega 7 graphics rather than the nVidia card, and even the integrated graphics are more powerful than the dedicated K2100M in my Precision M4800), but it will suck the battery down in 2-3 hrs. with graphically intense tasks (gaming or video editing). Overall not too bad considering my Precision M4800 with an I7-4910mq and Nvidia Quadro K2100M will suck down its 97 Wh battery in 2-3 hrs. just browsing the web and barely lasts an hour doing graphically intense tasks.

Laptops have definitely improved substantially over the last few years in efficiency (which is good since hot-swappable batteries are all but extinct), and the last couple gens of intel/AMD CPUs have finally gotten significant performance improvements as well since being all but stagnant for 5+ years. The "mid-range" ryzen 5 5600H scores 17,192 on passmark, vs. the "high-end" (for the time) I7-4910mq in my M4800 only scoring 6,195 (and even the I7-4790 in my desktop only scoring 7,237).

I'm surprised by how low the prices are on gaming laptops now. That one actually looks nice. I get about the same battery life on my current laptop with a 90Whr battery.

I don't think I posted my current laptop here, except for the other thread when I considered returning it and getting something else before being unable to find anything better. It's a Lenovo ThinkPad P53.

          CPU: Core i7-9750H
          RAM: 16GB
          GPU: Nvidia Quadro T1000
Storage: 1TB Western Digital SN730 SSD
Display: 1920x1080 60Hz HDR400 (HDR off because it's bugged in Windows and the brightness keeps dropping to the minimum)

Aside from the poor cooling (and Lenovo setting both CPU power limits to 90W, basically keeping the CPU in its short-term boost clock) and the strangely limited audio hardware (48kHz sample rate and no TRRS jack for headsets) that I've talked about before, the GPU has an older NVENC version that is missing some features and is equivalent in quality and speed to Intel Quick Sync in the CPU.

9th gen and earlier has a critical CSME vulnerability that requires a UEFI-BIOS update. (remote-code-execution) I had to get rid of my 9th-gen, because there was no UEFI-BIOS update with the new CSME found. The Intel CSME-checking utility failed it.

I remember that, and this laptop was patched pretty quickly (as expected for a business laptop).

Another thing is how annoying the Lenovo Vantage software is. It's nice to get updates if there's a major problem or security vulnerability, but it pushes a registry cleaner and might be what tried to force-install the wrong audio driver (causing a blue screen) once. None of the updates have set more reasonable CPU power limits yet, and it probably doesn't matter since setting them to what I think are Intel's defaults (55W PL1 and 45W PL2) still makes it go over 90°C under load.

Don't buy those $10 PSU "specials". They fail, and they have taken whole computers with them.

Yes I did, that pic is from the initial boot (note the incorrect date/time).

Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the performance.
