Samsung Xpress C1860FW something smells overheated

    Hi guys
I'm no expert on printers. I have this colour laser here, it has new toner cartridges fitted - Samsung Xpress C1860FW

It power on but after a minute it starts to smell bad like something is getting very hot (but not smoke). It's not so much a burning smell it's more acrid like burnt TCP or something similar

It's hard to pin down exactly where the smell is coming from but there is a gap under the scanner and in the back are some rollers - if I put my hand down there it feels warm. This is where I tried to take a photo (see attached)

The client says it does try to print but the paper jams in the back

Any suggestions what could be the problem with this one?

What is getting hot and what you smell is likely the fuser roller heating up.

      OK R__J

I will have to bring some paper to the workshop tomorrow and try it

It smells nasty though, what would cause that? Coud it just need cleaning? I've smelt something similar before when LCD inverters fail - but then of course there is a lot of smoke

Well there is the fuser roller that gets hot and if there was dust built up on it from sitting and not being used for a long time that might smell for a while. There is also a high voltage power supply that might cause an ozone type smell.

          Thanks R__J

I decided to ignore the smell and install the drivers (USB). When I turned on the printer the status LED went read and gave an error #U1-2320 - which means Fuser Unit failed (apparently)

I googled that and it said turn off and on again. I did that and this time I got no error - Status LED Green

I installed the drivers, then decided to try the copy function on the printer

The first page (excel spreadsheet) copied but the quality is shite

The next page I tried is a colour document, it scanned and copied in monochrome (could just be some setting) and again the quality was rubbish, then the page jammed and the printer said 'Output paper jam'. It jammed coming out of the fuser unit. I managed to pull it put gently.

I then removed the fuser unit, this is definitely where the strong smell is coming from. It looks all grubby on the roller.

So between the error code, your advice and the paper jamming coming out of the fuser, everything seems to be pointing to this being the faulty item.

Should I clean/service it or replace it?

Ahh NO. It's got paper all wrapped around it!

OK I removed all the brittle paper from the roller and it's working good now
