PS One (SCPH-101) disc reading issue

    Hello folks,

I have an SCPH-101 console with a bit of a strange issue. The unit doesn't want to read discs. Now that in itself isn't all that strange as the lasers in these things often go bad. What is strange, however, is that when I take the laser assembly from this unit and put it in a known working console, it works just fine. Also, when I try the laser assembly from the working unit in this broken one, the disc spins and the laser moves up and down but doesn't really do much else.

One thing I noticed is that it doesn't want to read even audio CDs until I turn the impedance down on the laser pot. Then it will start to read them but with garbled audio. Turning the impedance down even more will get the audio CD to play just fine and it will sometimes even read the PlayStation discs. I also took some voltage measurements from the output of the laser pot (before adjusting the impedance) and it read the same as what I had gotten on the working unit. Obviously I don't really like adjusting those due to the possibility of damaging a perfectly good laser but this problem has me a bit stumped.

Any idea as to what might cause a laser to work on one unit but not another?

*edit* Forgot to include that I can get the unit to read audio CDs and PS1 games with the pot set at around 600ohms.

turn the console upside-down and try it.
in the original playstations the surface that the laser moved on could wear down and make the laser drop.

Interesting... I'd never would have thought on that.

early lasers had hard plastic (not hard enough),
newer ones had a metal rail added.
i actually fixed one by putting a thin layer of epoxy on it!!!!!

Pioneer PD-F1007 CD player not reading
            by Xabi
Hi guys, I need some help with a CD player. It is a pioneer PD-F1007

The issue is that it doesn't play any disks. The disk gets loaded, spins up, but it doesn't actually plays. Just keeps spinning until I stop it.

If I put in the CD the wrong way, it will eject it quite quickly, so the unit at least understands that a CD is in and if it's in the correct orientation, tries to read it, but for some reason it can't.

I started with cleaning the lens to be sure, but ofc that didn't help. Also the laser is ligthing up at least, so it's not totally...

MacBook Air A2337 (820-02016) USB-C Port Issue – Only Works in One Orientation (CC Line Problem?)
            by rounin
            Hi everyone,

I'm working on a MacBook Air 2020 (A2337, board 820-02016) and running into a strange USB-C issue. I've gone through quite a bit of testing and part replacement, but I'm stuck — hoping someone here can shed some light.

            🛠 Original Issue
            The machine initially wouldn't negotiate 20V over USB-C — stuck at 5V.
Diagnosis showed PP1V5_UPC0_LDO_CORE shorted to ground.

I replaced U3100 (UF400) using a donor board (A2179), and the machine powers on fine now.

⚠️ New Problem: One USB-C Port Only Works in One Orientation...

OTHER WORLD COMPUTING OWCTB3DK13PSL OWC 13 Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock - Disconnects when READING from External HD at high speeds
            by KYBOSH
Weird one and way out of my league but I thought i drop it here in case anyone might have an idea on where to start looking.

I have a Thunderbolt Dock that has been behaving fine for a long time.
Admittedly I have only used it for menial data transfer tasks.

A few days ago I connected a USB-C external hard drive to it and wanted to test the transfer speeds.
I connected the proper high speed cables (USB-C to USB-C) and started the test with BlackMagic Disk Speed Test.
It wrote to the disk just fine. Got nearly 900MB/s+ write speeds but when it came time...

Three 820-01700 32GB Logic Boards Same Issue: Won't Wake From Hibernate
            by ugamazing
I have three identical-spec 820-01700 boards (2.6/32/512), and ALL THREE boards came to us with the same fault, from different sources: The boards don't wake from hibernation with the keyboard or lid, they ONLY wake when you press the power button. I understand this is a very minor issue, but the boards must be fixed!

We will of course begin with the obvious (checking lid signals), but I couldn't help but notice these three boards were all 32GB variants. Has anyone noticed an issue relating to these 32GB boards in particular? I of course don't think it's a RAM issue, but it's bizarre...
