How is it possible to destroy someone's computer remotely? How can this be?

I thought this stuff was only in the movies. I have a customer who just dropped off a Legion laptop. He said he was scammed and had a guy remote into his computer to extort him. When he told the scammer he knew what was going on, the scammer got angry and was yelling at him and his computer started smoking!!!! Sounds like bullshit right? Wrong.

There was a bypass cap as part of GPU vcore and it was EXPLODED. It exploded so hard it ripped the entire trace with multiple vias partially off the board. On the opposite side of the board, a small inductor was also exploded and ripped the board. How is this possible?

      poor design.

Even worse if everything is software controlled.

But it's also possible it was dumb (bad) luck.
