    Fi-Shock SS-725 Testing

    I am trying to figure out what is wrong with a Fi-Shock SS-725 Electric Fence Energizer. It does not seem to have enough output. I get two screwdrivers (one on the positive and one on the negative) and about 1/16 away from each other I can see some electricity (spark) flowing from one screwdriver to another. But it looks like its not enough. I am trying to see if I can get my hands on an analog KV Meter. Could I test with a Digital Meter? Here are the input/output specs:

    FI-SHOCK
    SS-725

    Input
    ====
    AC Powered, 5 Acres. Plugs into a standard
    110-120 V outlet. Has a continuous AC
    current output.

    Output
    ====
    800 V
    +/- 20%
    open circuit
    voltage

    Thank You.

    The pulse from the fence energizer is too fast for most meters. It will destroy cheap meters that do not have proper protection. I think what you are saying / experiencing is to be normal for this fence energizer, since it is just a lil tiny thing build more for like rodents and not big live stock. It only does like 800V, while the big ones do 6 to 8kV easy.
    If you do find that it used to work / spark better when it was new, replace the capacitor inside.
