The link 'this thread' doesn't work. It goes to https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=612720 but says No Thread Specified

Sorry about that. the right link was https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38368, the ID I used was for a specific post within that thread.

In any case, the initial advice I was given here was spot on, and I should have listened to it. As soon as I put a proper heatsink and fan on top of the CPU I got the motherboard to stay on. Live and learn...

Unfortunately now I don't know if I have a working CPU to test. I got a second motherboard with the same socket, and of the 5 CPUs I have that should be compatible, only one works in the second motherboard but not in the KT4 Ultra, and 4 of them don't work on either. So either those weren't working in the first place, or they died at some point during testing.

Anyhow, I'm parking this repair until I get a known good CPU and I get the eeprom programmer to check if the bios chip is good.

Thanks for your help so far

Re: MS-6590 KT4 Ultra - short on vcore

Can you post what CPU's you have and also what the 2nd motherboard is?
A lot of early and mid-era socket 462 motherboards only had support for 133 MHz FSB CPUs - that is, Thoroughbred, at best. Barton CPUs were often only supported on the newer socket 462 motherboards that could do 166 & 200 MHz FSB. So check your CPU compatibility there. If the CPUs are known to be compatible with these boards, then at least they should have worked in the 2nd board, since you were able to get it working with one of the CPUs.

The second mobo is an M7VIG 400. Both this and the KT4 Ultra support 200, 266, and 333 MHz FSB CPUs according to their manuals

The CPUs I have should be supported: the models are
          2 x SDA2200DUT3D (Sempron 2200+, Thoroughbred, 333 MHz FSB)
          3 x AX2000DMT3C (Athlon XP 2000+, Palomino, 266 MHz FSB).

The one I got to work is one of the Semprons.

I learned the hard way that the KT4 was actually doing the right thing by shutting down, the M7VIG happily fried (burned plastic smell included) three other CPUs I had when I turn it on without the heatsink, and even when I put the heatsink loosely on top of the CPU. You can't learn without breaking stuff, I suppose
