Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

    Hi,

I found this forum while researching a problem with my Dell GX620 USFF machine. I use it as a mythtv frontend. I got it used a few years ago, and it has been on 24/7 for a couple of years. Now the caps are all blown out, as I discovered last night after reading all the posts on this forum.

I have a background in electronics and software. I'm not afraid of any mechanical task, so I ordered a kit of capacitors to replace them all. I also happen to be the cheapest person on the planet...I can't help it. It's a sickness.

Just want to say thanks for all the nice technical info on this site. It sure is helpful.

    Eric

Hello, my name is Cengiz. I found your forum while searching for my apparently crappy Sacon FZ capacitors that blew up ten at a time on my also crappy Biostar 590SLI motherboard. After reading a bit in here, I decided to replace 19 of them. It's been a while I did any soldering, so let's see how it goes. Thanks for keeping this place up. It is really useful. My hat to you, tophat

          Hi everybody!

I am new to this forum as you can imagine. Occasionally I am doing repairs by myself, but as I lost contact with this field a couple of decades ago, I am practically at a beginner level. For me is just a hobby, making me remember the times when, as a student, I was repairing all sorts of devices and also have built from bits and pieces Sinclair Spectrum compatible computers. Time passed by, but still I enjoy to repair my devices when I have the spare time required.

          Best regards!

            Hey forum,

I am software engineer and computer security specialist so I can help with computer questions if you guys have any, I found this forum after looking for information related to my LCD Toshiba issue. I'm still trying to figure out why the screen is still not showing but hopefully with help I can find the answer here and fix it myself.

I'm a Computer Systems Integrator, do both hardware and software bugfixing, repair, system design and specification, all that geeky stuff that actually turns the pile of wires, transistors and bits into something that's actually productive, useful and understandable by mere mortals.

Started out as an Electronics Technician for a Car Stereo Warranty Depot. Eventually Managed that place. Managed a few Service Departments for various High Quality Audio, then Computer Companies. Been through the mill, several times actually. Have the burnmarks and stippling from the punch presses to show for it.

                  Hello everyone!

I found this forum looking for a fix for a new monitor I've been given. I knew this place was good after searching and searching the web to no avail, and then finding a post here that details my problem in full, with pictures!

I've no formal education, technically... I took a couple classes in computer programming because I was interested in video game design, but after typing code for a couple years I got bored and went on to other things. I've recently got more into the hardware side of things, and am extremely interested in everything that it has to offer. I took a couple classes for basic circuitry and electronics, and am otherwise self taught.

From an old audio elect./ gtr rocker. Any others out there?
Greetings , I'm already am impressed with the talent and passion for cool results thru electronics I see here and will learn a lot. Came here due to daughters Gateway M7 noteB having ur well doc'd power/batt MB connect issues. Like most of my electronics, mainly old audio from 50's - 90's many cool devices need repair or upgrades. I was the Burr Brown, Signetics, Supertex(mosfets), Siemens passives and Inmos(64 bit Transputer chips) and United Tech gate arrays rep, in the mid to late 80's. IN 90's I was repping top audio brands like EV, Studer, QSC and Fostex to engneers/designers and working with cool bands like Journey, Van Halen and others. Some war stories there man. Did SCADA SW and process control the last 20. I still play guitar in a few benefit bands, where I keep testing my old tube amps(still need ultimate attenuator design) combined with some DSP stereo rig effects and losing more hearing while the girls dance. Life's simple pleasures. Regretfully I was so busy learning just overview apps and selling the stuff I never acquired your tech/repair knowledge or raw guts to plunge in and blow it up, I mean fix it. SO I am a newbie old rocker that still wants to learn and very open to your suggestions on on-line basic - advance electronics repair courses, now that I am also laid off and needing repairs, more music and reliably working PC's. This may be an oxi moron for "Partially Consistent". Thanks and be patient please. 53Willys (yes I own the old jeep, like some of my guitars and electronics for over 40 years)......

Hi, I'm Dan from NJ. I was a Dell field tech during the tail-end of the GX270 situation, just a parts swapper but it was quite an experience. Dell would only replace individual motherboards for most companies and schools, but legal firms always had every single board replaced all at once. Go figure...

I have done some component replacements, but usually on a monkey-see,monkey-do basis (look up problem online and replace the part they said to replace). I'd really like to learn how to diagnose the problems, especially with capacitors, diodes, mosfets and everything else (I heard somewhere that the "FET" in mosfet stands for "Fire Emitting Transistor"). Can't wait to see the results of one of those firsthand.

My first challenge will be a non-working HP Goldfish3-GL8E motherboard covered in Nichicon HM's, Ltec's on the VRM (the Ltecs have no venting feature whatsoever...solid top), a couple KZG's, some unknown manuf. yellow-colored caps, and even a GSC that was pulled out, complete with bullseye bung...this is apparently one of those boards that should've included a soldering iron as a freebie.

I've learned a lot here, and hope to contribute stories and pics in the future.

                        See you later,
                        Dan

                          Hi Everyone
I am a former(well still am, but just don't get paid to do it now) technician from the security and musical instrument(amplifiers/keyboards,etc) fields. Always getting free big screens and have been away from the repair side for a long time and looking to learn some things and share some things where I can. I live in cottage country and they charge enormous prices for electronic repairs here, which is why I have a basement full of big screens waiting to fix - this isn't the land of flybacks anymore, I have to upgrade my skills and knowledge a bit. Hope to learn a lot and share anything I have learned.
                          Thanks

Hi. I love this site. I'm prolly not the average user here. Never had a job in the field, just like to tinker. Learned electronics myself as a kid, was into CB radio almost made decent money turning up peoples radios as a teenager. Now I like to revive dead monitors and motherboards. Bad caps make me happy, what can I say, I pop something open and see the visibly blown cap I smile. My current projects are a pile of lcd's and a couple old tube radios, an aa5 and a more complex am/fm one...

Hi everyone, My name is Gerry and of late I've become interested in technical forums . I love the info and solutions you can find from others on anything technical.

I like my privacy on the net but I love to share any useful info and knowledge I may have, so that's why I'm here, to share and learn.

I've worked in the Pest Industry for the first 17 years of my working life but now I'm an electronics technician (last 7 years). It's a fairly loose term as I don't really consider being a card jockey much of a tech. Unfortunately component level repair is long gone where I work but my real passion is being able to repair at that level. My experience there for is pretty average. I have been generally interested in electronics and tinkering with anything electrical / mechanical since I was 15.

I pretty much enjoy fixing anything I find that breaks. I got started very late into the computers, at age 32 but I do recall the VIC20 whilst at school. My first pc was a celeron 600 with a 8G HD.

Of late I've become bored with my work but occasionally someone will bring a private item in for repair at component level. That's when I get excited.

Recently one of my colleagues brought in a Panasonic Plasma TV for repair and spent months on and off trying to sort it out. I poked my nose in here and there but he was losing interest and for some reason did not trust my gut instincts of what may be the fault. Anyway I suggested should he lose interest, not to junk it but give it to me for a crack.

He did and i had it going that week. Now I find myself hooked on finding unwanted faulty LCD/PLASMA Tvs and electronic goods to play with.

It frustrates me a little how much we are a throwaway society and repairing is unfashionable. All I see is a lot of people paying good money for products that fail 2-3 years into their life mainly due to failure sometimes of some basic low quality components.

Anyway that's why I'm here, a number searches for info on tcon boards have brought me to this site . So I joined.

                              Thanks.

Now I volunteer and help folks with their electronics and pc unraveling. Right now I got started with LG tv and looking for a power source. Found a thread that I am following on this site. Again, thanks for allowing me the pleasure to enjoy my appetite on your site.

Hello - As directed, I'm a new member and am posting an introduction here. I am a pure novice when it comes to any type of electronics repair. My background is totally non-scientific. My interest in the forum has to do with my 3 year old samsung 226bw monitor, which started "flickering" when powered up. I was infuriated to learn that it was due to a few bad 85 cent capacitors, which could be replaced with a little know-how and perseverance. I have never soldered anything or really attempted much in the way of electronics repair, so this will be a bit of an adventure I guess. I've researched the repair and have gathered the materials/tools, etc..but have run into a few problems - so would like to see if I can find some help on the forums. Thanks! Bartleby
